My Darling, Coax Me.

CHAPTER 33: Fever.

A wave of joy spread across everyone's faces, and they secretly began to meticulously adjust their attire. After being in the palace for two whole days, the Crown Prince finally appeared.

They absolutely had to make a good impression on the Crown Prince.

Not long after, a tall figure clad in a deep black brocade robe adorned with cloud patterns passed before the eyes of the noble ladies and took his seat at the head of the table.

Everyone bowed together, their voices sweet and delicate: “Greetings, Your Highness, the Crown Prince.”

Grand Eunuch An said, “Rise, ladies.”

The noble ladies rose, their postures graceful, their faces radiant with sweet smiles.

No wonder it's so late today; it turns out His Highness has arrived.

He must have just finished with matters of state.

After all, it's the Crown Prince who is choosing a consort; naturally, he would come personally to take a look.

To see, and to find out what kind of appearance and personality he likes.

Everyone thought Yun Shanggong would be the one presiding today, so several of them hadn't dressed particularly carefully. Now, they were filled with regret.

But after waiting for a while, and after the Crown Prince sat down, he didn't speak, leaving everyone wondering what was going on.

Mu Lanru thought that the Crown Prince's sudden arrival today must not be for Yun Ling.

Yun Ling wouldn't dare inform the Crown Prince of those matters and offend the noble ladies.

Then the only reason is that His Highness came merely to assess everyone's talents and decide their positions.

Thinking this, she walked out gracefully, bowing before Xie Jue. “Mu Lanru, the legitimate daughter of the Yongsheng Marquise, greets His Highness. The scenery in the Imperial Garden is exquisite today, with flowers in full bloom. I would like to play a piece titled ‘Spring Day’ for Your Highness.”

Her voice faded into the air, but a response never came. The silence hung heavy.

This caused her smile to waver slightly.

Seeing this, everyone looked at each other, at a loss for what to do.

The color gradually drained from the Anfu Junzhu's face.

She had been blinded by foolishness yesterday, actually being provoked by a mere maid.

Xie Jue rested his hand on his temple, his long fingers curled slightly. His expression was impassive as he surveyed the faces below – a mixture of panic, coquettishness, and a variety of other emotions. One by one, he observed the delicate faces of the noble ladies.

Among them, one would become his Crown Princess, and two would become his concubines.

He would, of course, treat them with respect.

Moreover, their character couldn't compare to even Li Xintang, the daughter of Minister Li. His visit today proved this to be true.

Yun Ling, the Shanggong, could handle these women with ease.

However, the position of Crown Princess would never be given to someone as easily angered and lacking in wisdom as Anfu Junzhu.

Furthermore, this flower-viewing banquet absolutely must not be disrupted.

Grand Eunuch An, receiving the signal, said:

“Before we begin, I ask that each of you ladies remember this: since ancient times, the selection of consorts has prioritized virtue and goodness. If you rely on your status to act arrogantly and recklessly, disrupting the flower-viewing banquet, it shows a lack of character fit for a consort of the Crown Prince, and the Eastern Palace will not retain such a person.”

These words were actually a warning to the young ladies.

To be honest, the most arrogant, bloodthirsty, and unkind person in this world is His Highness himself! (T/N: Eunuch An, do you dare to say that loud?🀣)

The noble ladies replied in unison: “Yes.”

Besides Anfu Junzhu, Zhou Xiangjun on the other side was also trembling with fear.

Yesterday, besides Anfu Junzhu, her voice had been the loudest in her clamor.

  She deeply regretted her actions.

She had heard that His Highness the Crown Prince was notoriously intolerant of any flaws, had a terribly violent temper, and killed without blinking an eye.

She had dared to offend the Eastern Palace—utterly foolish!

Her eyes trembled as she looked at the figure in a light purplish-red dress in front of her, her heart filled with complex emotions.

Xie Jue pinched the bridge of his nose, his knuckles clearly defined fingers lightly tapping on the table.

After a moment, he nodded. “Begin.”

For the following performances, His Highness showed little interest in choosing, so Grand Eunuch An swept his gaze downward, settling on Mu Lanru at the front. Thinking she was His Highness's cousin, he chose her. “Miss Mu, weren't you going to play a piece of music? Please.”

Choosing her first for a musical performance showed her importance and the honor bestowed upon her. Mu Lanru was secretly delighted, curving her lips into a smile. “Yes.”

Indeed, her cousin treated her differently.

After speaking, she had her maidservant bring her qin (a type of Chinese zither). Sitting down, she took a few deep breaths to compose herself, preparing to give her best performance.

The fragrant scent of flowers filled the Imperial Garden, accompanied by the beautiful music and fluttering butterflies.

Truly worthy of being a young lady from the Yongsheng Marquis's Mansion. Her performance of ‘Spring Day’ was elegant and tranquil, like the sound of heaven itself.

Mu Lanru was very confident in her musical skills. Everyone who heard her praised her performance, and she believed her cousin, the Crown Prince, would also look upon her more favorably.

Thinking this, she boldly spoke, “This piece, “Spring Day,’ I've practiced for a long time, and I dedicate it... to my cousin.”

A blush rose on her face.

As long as it could stir his memories of her, even if it was a little improper, it didn't matter.

As expected, the Crown Prince sitting above lifted his eyelids and his gaze fell upon her.

Mu Lanru immediately lowered her head in shyness, unable to see his expression.

Then, she was interrupted by Grand Eunuch An's voice, “Is there another young lady who wishes to perform?”

Jiang Qingwan immediately spoke up, “Your humble subject has prepared a piece for the pipa (a Chinese lute).”

  ……

After listening to several musical pieces, the Crown Prince, due to matters of state, departed early.

The remaining young ladies who hadn't yet performed their talents bit their lips in regret.

Several people immediately surrounded Mu Lanru, flattering her. “His Highness chose Miss Mu first; truly, their relationship is quite profound.”

”Of course, Miss Mu is His Highness the Crown Prince's cousin; naturally, she's different.”

“If I were to say, the position of Crown Princess…”

Mu Lanru was inwardly pleased, but outwardly she humbly replied, “Nothing is decided yet, everyone, please don't tease me.”

  ……

In the afternoon, after Yun Ling finished handling the affairs of the Shanggong Bureau, she still had to prepare for the final assessment.

She already knew about what happened that morning.

His actions in reprimanding them were a small favor to her, but those women would be his concubines in the future; it was naturally his business to begin with.

As for the rest, she naturally knew that he couldn't possibly make his future consorts lose face for her, a mere female official.

And this consideration was something he should have given her anyway.

She knew he placed great importance on the position of his wife, which was why he held this flower-viewing banquet. Moreover, she felt that a man who didn't even show consideration to his future wife was frivolous and unreasonable.

His actions in reprimanding them were merely to ensure the flower-viewing banquet proceeded smoothly. Otherwise, if everyone disrespected her as the person in charge, wouldn't it cause chaos?

Originally, with the Empress Dowager and the Empress involved in the selection of the Crown Prince's consort, such chaos would never have occurred. It's only because the position of Empress is currently vacant that it fell to her, a low-ranking Shanggong, to manage this.

Yun Ling only hoped that this flower-viewing banquet would proceed smoothly.

Sure enough, when she went again, everyone was much more well-behaved.

Only Mu Lanru's gaze was no longer hidden; it was haughty and challenging, looking at her subtly.

Before, the Yongsheng Marquis's Mansion had been weak, and she had been ridiculed wherever she went, forced to endure everything. Now, seeing her family's fortunes about to turn, she had become somewhat arrogant and unrestrained.

After all, she's the Crown Prince's cousin; their relationship is different.

Even if the Crown Prince didn't consider her feelings, he would still consider the Duke of Chen's family's face. The Duke of Chen's family wanted to form a marriage alliance with the East Palace, but they had no daughters, so this cousin, Mu Lanru, was pushed forward.

Mu Lanru's hostility towards her was too great; she had already become a thorn in her eye, and no matter what method she used, she couldn't dispel her ill intentions. This gave Yun Ling quite a headache.

After the event, Yun Ling wanted to return to the Shanggong Bureau. Just as she reached a small path by the lake, a light and cheerful voice called out from behind, “Yun Gugu, wait a moment.”

  It was Mu Lanru.

Yun Ling closed her eyes. She really was a persistent ghost.

Turning around, “Miss Mu, is there something you need?”

This place is secluded, with few people around; it's a good place to talk without restraint.

Mu Lanru calmly adjusted her hair at her temples, her eyes carrying a condescending disdain. “I presume you know about what happened in the Imperial Garden this morning? I told you, my cousin the Crown Prince and I have been very close since childhood.”

  Yun Ling:“……”

So she deliberately sought her out to show off.

But according to her status, since she had already hit Anfu Junzhu, it was only natural for her to be the first one. Regardless, it's none of her business.

Since she wants to show off, Yun Ling, who wouldn't mind playing matchmaker, bowed slightly and said sincerely,

  “Then, congratulations, Miss Mu.”

Mu Lanru suddenly felt as if she had punched cotton; this wasn't the result she wanted.

But she couldn't swallow the humiliation from yesterday. Couldn't she have just hidden it if she discovered it? A mere female official, daring to threaten her?

“Such a silver tongue. No wonder, having grown up in the depths of the palace, groveling and living at the mercy of others—a lowly palace maid with a capacity for forbearance that surpasses ordinary people. Even after all this, you can still congratulate me so politely,” Mu Lanru smiled faintly. “Don't you have any backbone?”

“Speaking of forbearance, Miss Mu is no slouch either,” Yun Ling's expression remained calm and unperturbed, not even glancing at her provocation, instead speaking calmly. “Marchioness of Yongsheng once asked me to look after you during the hunt. She said you’ve suffered a great deal these years, often overlooked and scorned in social gatherings; a truly pitiable situation. That's why I didn't want to fall out with you, but I can't stand your arrogance now that you've achieved a little success. You're narrow-minded, short-sighted, and petty, Miss Mu. If you don't change, I fear that in the future—”

She delivered her judgment with finality, “You will suffer endlessly.”

Mu Lanru trembled with rage. “What are you, daring to pronounce judgment on my future?”

Yun Ling's words undoubtedly struck a nerve. It's like someone solemnly telling you that you'll never get rich in your life—how could it not be infuriating!

But her daring to say it means she isn't afraid of Mu Lanru's revenge.

Repeatedly yielding to bullying is useless; she’d understood this a long time ago.

People never fear the weak and yielding; instead, they take advantage. What they fear is someone even more ruthless.

“You should be grateful that you can still suppress me with your title as Shanggong today,” Mu Lanru looked at her pretty face, completely enraged. “If I become a concubine of the Eastern Palace, if I ascend to the position of Crown Princess, what will you use to suppress me then? Wouldn't I be able to make you live or die as I please? You've surely witnessed plenty of the tricks of palace women; even if His Highness the Crown Prince wants to protect you, he might not be able to do so completely.”

Yun Ling felt truly weary. “Then, I shall wait and see.”

Just as she was about to leave, a sound of approaching footsteps suddenly came from directly ahead, accompanied by Grand Eunuch An's obsequious voice and a cold, low tone.

  It's the Crown Prince.

This small path is quiet and secluded; the Crown Prince occasionally comes here to relax. Aside from Grand Eunuch An and Yun Ling, almost no one in the palace knows. Yun Ling chose this path today because her master's remains were once drowned in this lake. She doesn't even know when her master died, so she doesn't know his death anniversary. It's almost summer again, and she came here to talk to her master.

Just as she snapped back to reality, the Crown Prince's figure was already near.

Before she could approach, Mu Lanru had already quickly walked over, shyly bowing. “This humble subject greets His Highness the Crown Prince. I never expected to meet Your Highness here; it is my good fortune.”

Then Yun Ling also came forward to bow.

Xie Jue's gaze fell upon her. She should be at the Shanggong Bureau, he thought. His thin lips parted slightly. “What are you doing here?”

Mu Lanru immediately interjected, “It's like this, Your Highness. These past few days, I've had some questions I didn't understand, and Yun Gugu has specially called me here to instruct me.”

  Yun Ling:“……”

Xie Jue, having heard this, looked at Yun Ling. “Oh? What are you teaching her?”

Yun Ling had no intention of complaining in front of him; it would be useless, and she wasn't accustomed to such things. She said, “It's not exactly instruction; I was just chatting with Miss Mu.”

Xie Jue tugged at the corner of his mouth. “Yet I hear that you at the Shanggong Bureau are incredibly busy. Even I can't get to see you.”

This was precisely why Yun Ling hadn't been to the East Palace these past few days.

Yun Ling pursed her lips, momentarily speechless.

Just as Mu Lanru was about to say something, Grand Eunuch An, standing behind Xie Jue, suddenly whispered something in his ear.

Without turning his head, the Crown Prince left.

Mu Lanru could tell that His Highness the Crown Prince was displeased with Yun Ling; otherwise, he wouldn't have spoken in such a tone.

Since entering the palace, her cousin had always been distant towards her, and she wasn't unaware of it. But she also knew it was because of her father's wrongdoing, not because of her.

Now was a perfect opportunity to evoke her cousin's pity.

As long as she could become the Crown Princess, she didn't mind using extreme measures.

Before the Crown Prince had gone too far, Mu Lanru suddenly walked a few steps to Yun Ling's side, her mocking voice reaching Yun Ling's ears.

She said, “Tell me, if we both fell into the lotus pond at the same time, who do you think the Crown Prince would save?”

Mu Lanru's meaning was clear: she wanted to push Yun Ling into the water with her.

As a young lady from the Yongsheng Marquis's Mansion, the palace servants would naturally save her first.

And if Yun Ling guessed correctly, after falling into the water, Mu Lanru would have countless accusations to throw at her.

Having spent many years in the palace, she had seen countless such schemes of framing and vying for favor among the palace concubines, how could she not know Mu Lanru's intentions?

Yun Ling looked straight at her and replied with a few words, “Miss Mu, has anyone ever told you that your tricks are truly beneath my notice?”

  “What?——”

Then, before Mu Lanru could react, Yun Ling turned and without hesitation, jumped directly into the lake.

The next moment, the screams of two palace maids rang out, “Not good, someone has fallen into the water!”

  Mu Lanru stood there, dumbfounded.

Xie Jue hadn't gone far when he heard a series of cries and screams coming from behind him.

Grand Eunuch An also heard it, “It sounds like someone fell into the water.”

Xie Jue wasn't interested in such things; if a palace servant fell in, someone else would save them.

An Zhong turned his head to look, only to see a crimson female official's robe bobbing in the lake. His eyes widened instantly, “It seems to be Yun Shanggong!”

Xie Jue stopped in his tracks, his brow furrowed coldly. Turning around quickly, he ordered, “All of you, stop!”

  The guards quickly replied, “Yes.”

Grand Eunuch An also cleverly stood still, only watching as His Highness the Crown Prince quickly walked forward.

Yun Ling had seen a palace maid she knew who was a good swimmer appear, and that's why she jumped in.

Sure enough, she was quickly rescued. The young palace maid, Xia Qiu, hurriedly patted her back, “Gugu, Gugu, are you alright?”

Yun Ling was drenched, kneeling on the ground. Wet droplets of water constantly rolled down her face, her crimson lips now pale. Her dark hair clung to her delicate white face, her shoulders thin and frail; she looked both pathetic and pitiful.

The lake water was dirty and cold. Yun Ling supported herself on the ground, her eyes drooping weakly. “Miss Mu, are you satisfied now?”

The next second, a large black brocade robe enveloped her, completely covering her and shielding her from the biting cold.

Mu Lanru saw the distinguished man before her and hurriedly knelt down, “N-no, it's not like this, Your Highness. This has nothing to do with me; she did it herself—”

Before she could finish her sentence, Xie Jue interrupted her, commanding two palace maids, “Take Yun Gugu back.”

Xia Qiu and Xia Chun quickly responded, “Yes.”

Yun Ling wrapped the brocade robe around herself and bowed deeply. “This servant takes her leave.”

Without further explanation, she left with the two palace maids.

Although it was a scheme against Mu Lanru, she had indeed suffered greatly.

  ……

After Yun Ling left, only a puddle of wet footprints remained on the small path.

Mu Lanru hadn't reacted in time just now, but now she had regained a bit of her composure.

Although Yun Ling had indeed jumped into the lake to frame her, who could prove it was her doing? On the contrary, she could even say that Yun Ling did it deliberately to falsely accuse her.

Thinking this, Mu Lanru calmed down a bit and said pitifully, “Your Highness, please allow me to explain, that Yun Gugu was truly not pushed by me. Why would I push her without any reason? Yun Gugu is in charge of the flower viewing banquet; I wouldn't dare to offend her. Today, she suddenly called me over, and I didn't dare to hesitate, I came immediately.

Who knew that when she saw Your Highness arrive, she would suddenly do such a thing, so falsely accusing me. I truly have no way to defend myself.” Saying this, two lines of tears fell.

Xie Jue's tone was unreadable, neither happy nor angry. “You mean to say that you didn't push her into this filthy lake water, that she jumped in herself?”

Hearing his tone, it seemed he didn't believe her, so Mu Lanru quickly added, “I know Your Highness may not believe that Yun Gugu would do this, but you may not know that Yun Gugu is probably resentful towards me because of my relationship with my cousin. Although she is only a mere female official and shouldn't aspire to Your Highness's favor, she started targeting me at the flower viewing banquet for no reason, making it hard for me not to overthink.”

She attributed Yun Ling's act of jumping into the lake to a desire for favor, thinking that the Crown Prince would surely believe her.

Swallowing her grievances, she feigned understanding and said, “Yun Gugu treating me this way is also a kind of affection for Your Highness, and I don't resent her. As long as Yun Gugu can calm down, I'm willing to kneel here until I die. I only beg Yun Gugu to not target me again in the future.”

Mu Lanru lowered her head, but the corners of her mouth subtly turned upward. She was already eight parts certain of success.

How could the Crown Prince tolerate a female official vying for his favor with a consort?

A cold wind carrying the stench of the lake water blew by, inexplicably causing a chilling sensation.

“Really? That's fine,” Xie Jue's voice came from above, his tone seemingly calm yet chillingly cold. “In the East Palace, framing and attempting to murder a female official... since you like kneeling, then kneel here.”

The Crown Prince's punishment required no explanation.

Mu Lanru's smile faltered, her eyes widening in disbelief.

  How could this be…?

She had spoken logically and flawlessly, how could His Highness not believe her? Could he possibly tolerate a female official vying for favor with a consort? That's impossible!

Mu Lanru shook her head repeatedly. “Cousin Brother, it's not like that, I…”

She wanted to reach out and grab his clothes, but Grand Eunuch An, who had arrived, blocked her.

“Sentiment?” Xie Jue scoffed. “How many times have I even met you?”

He found her annoying, even as a child, only showing her a modicum of kindness out of respect for his maternal grandfather.

Summoning her into the palace was also for the honor of the Duke of Chen's Mansion.

“Narrow-minded, vicious, and incredibly foolish,” Xie Jue turned around. “This... is the daughter the Yongsheng Marquis's Mansion raised?””

Xie Jue truly had no patience; he found speaking any further bothersome and turned to leave.

Mu Lanru collapsed to the ground.

Impossible, impossible... where exactly did she go wrong?

  ……

Returning to her room, Yun Ling had someone prepare a bucket of hot water for her to wash away the grime.

Although the weather was somewhat warm, the lake water was still cold.

Furthermore, the lake water wasn't clean, so after washing her hair and body, Yun Ling changed into a clean set of clothes.

But even so, she couldn't rest; she still needed to preside over the affairs of the Wen Shui Pavilion in the afternoon.

This flower-viewing banquet lasted for three days, and today was only the second day.

Regarding what happened by the lake, Yun Ling instructed everyone involved to keep their mouths shut and not let a single word leak out. Therefore, only a few people knew about it, and it wouldn't cause any trouble, naturally not affecting the following flower-viewing banquet.

The reason she actively jumped in was that she would rather do that than wait for Mu Lanru to push her and then have a pointless argument. Since she was going to suffer either way, she might as well take the initiative and jump in first.

She was a Shanggong and represented the Crown Prince's face; if something happened to her, he wouldn't stand idly by.

In front of the Crown Prince, arguing was the worst thing to do. Therefore, without saying a word, she left with Xia Qiu.

She had long known that since ancient times, once the imperial harem involved the emperor's favor and power, there would be countless troubles and schemes.

This is truly a very tiring matter.

Whether it was due to the exhaustion from the Mu Lanru incident or from falling into the water, after returning from Wen Shui Pavilion in the afternoon, Yun Ling felt dizzy and feverish.

She lay down in bed and slept soundly.

  ……

  The East Palace study.

Xie Jue supported his forehead, rubbing his aching temples. His expression was far from pleasant.

  More than that.

His headache was excruciating; it was a migraine, and he felt like killing someone. His phoenix eyes were filled with intense killing intent.

Anyone with eyes would want to be ten thousand miles away from him, fearing a bloodbath.

Only Chen Zhan, the young Master of Duke of Chen’s Manor, dared to enter at this time.

Hearing his footsteps, Xie Jue lifted his head.

Seeing Xie Jue's expression, Chen Zhan immediately raised his hands in surrender. “I'll say what I need to and leave.”

“The new policies are almost ready. Besides, the only opposition in the court is Li Shangshu's faction. What do you plan to do about him?”

Xie Jue: “How to deal with him? Kill him, of course.”

Chen Zhan: “Are you joking with me?”

  Xie Jue snorted.

He let out a breath, stood up, and said, “Either pressure him, or appease him. Doesn't he have a son? I heard he's a good-for-nothing who's gotten into a lot of trouble. You can find people to gather evidence and accuse him. He'll be too busy saving himself to even think about opposing you.”

Chen Zhan: “I knew you were ruthless. What about Xiao Qi Bai? Weren't you intentionally marrying the new and old ministers?”

“The marriage alliance is necessary, but not with his daughter's Li Xintang.”

Xie Jue had other plans, but he was in a bad mood today and didn't bother to explain.

The topic changed. “Take your cousin back. Otherwise, don't blame me for being unkind.”

Chen Zhan exclaimed, “She's your cousin too!”

He paused, then said helplessly, “Alright, you know what my father is like. He loves these marriage alliances. My aunt swayed him, and I couldn't persuade him otherwise.”

Xie Jue: “Go back and tell my uncle that as long as I'm here, the Duke of Chen Mansion's glory will remain. Don't try any more tricks.”

“Alright, alright,” Chen Zhan agreed. “What happened? What's going on?”

“Nothing,” Xie Jue said. “I suddenly realized that too many people are annoying.”

  Chen Zhan nodded thoughtfully.

Although Xie Jue is a crown prince, appearing tyrannical and lawless, he is actually extremely deep and calculating, well-informed, far-sighted, and unwavering in his decisions.

His decisions require no further explanation.

Just as he was about to leave, Grand Eunuch An hurried forward, “Your Highness, the Shanggong Bureau sent word that Yun Shanggong has a fever and is afraid she cannot preside over tomorrow's flower banquet. They request that Wu Shangyi take her place.”

Xie Jue paused, then looked up. “A fever?”

Grand Eunuch An: “Yes, I heard she has a high fever, probably because she fell into the water today.”

“But Your Highness, rest assured, the imperial physician has already seen her, prescribed medicine, and she's already asleep after taking it.”

Xie Jue rested his hands on the desk, his eyes lowered, not looking up, only letting out a soft, “Mm.”

  Grand Eunuch An withdrew.

  The study fell silent.

After a long while, Xie Jue straightened up, looking at Chen Zhan who was still standing straight, his brows furrowed. “What are you still doing here?”

Chen Zhan raised his eyebrows. “Alright, alright, I'll leave now.”

  Muttering as he left,

“Why does a female official's fever require the Crown Prince's personal attention now?”

T/N: Oh my gosh, the Crown Prince's sudden thoughts of Li Xintang in this chapter made me reread Chapter 24 to figure out who she is. And I noticed many mistakes I made there!Ugh, my perfectionist tendencies are acting up again. I misspelled Li Xintang's name as Li Xinteng! Xinteng? Who is she? Oh my gosh, I'm so angry and annoyed. I even mistranslated the fifth princess's name in several paragraphs; it should be Xie Jinjia, not Xie Jingjia. Grrr, please let me know if you spot any grammatical errors or name misspellings, okay? I almost proofread this novel from chapter one again! That's how obsessive I can be sometimes! 🀣 Then, I will get resentful towards this novel and feel lazy to translate, hahahaha... Ahem, don't worry, my resentment and my promise to translate are separate issues. I will always upload on the promised date.
