My Darling, Coax Me.

CHAPTER 66: He Actually Came In Person.

The Shen residence was a martial arts family, so the grounds were spacious. They even had a martial arts training platform in the backyard, where Shen Chunxiang practiced every day.

Unfortunately, it was raining today, otherwise she would have definitely shown Yun Ling some moves.

Arriving in the backyard, Mrs. Shen saw Shen Chunxiang bring a young lady back. She walked over and, upon seeing her, immediately smiled, “Isn't this the young lady from the Xiao residence? I heard you're close with our Chunxiang. This is the first time I've met you.”

Yun Ling bowed to Mrs. Shen, “Yun Ling of the Xiao family, I greet Mrs. Shen.”

Mrs. Shen examined Yun Ling, her eyes filled with admiration. She quickly said warmly,

  “Come visit often.”

Then, with a playful tone, she said, “My Chunxiang is a bit clumsy. Not many young ladies are willing to play with her. It's rare to find someone who doesn't mind.”

Shen Chunxiang was dissatisfied, “Mother, what are you saying! By the way, where's Father?”

Mrs. Shen immediately said, “Your father is in his study. He has important matters to attend to, so try not to bother him.”

“By the way, your cousin is also here.”

  “Why is she here again?”

Shen Chunxiang furrowed her brows, clearly not fond of her cousin. She then directly led Yun Ling back to her own courtyard.

The spring rain continued to fall.

A maidservant brought in two bowls of eight-treasure pounded tea and some dried fruit snacks.

Shen Chunxiang sighed, looking at the rain outside the window, “This weather, it just decided to rain. But it's okay, you've already left the Palace, so we'll have plenty of opportunities to play together in the future.”

She asked, “Is life outside the Palace much freer?”

Yun Ling also looked at the rain falling continuously outside the window, damp and sticky, “Yes. I always envied you, free and unrestrained.”

“It's okay, you can be free now too,” Shen Chunxiang said carelessly. “But we're both getting older, and we're not married. People are talking about us. It's a good thing my cousin didn't come to my courtyard, otherwise I'd have to endure her sarcastic remarks. I don't care. Those weak and delicate young masters in the capital, none of them are good enough for me. Two punches from me and they'd be stiff as boards. I'm just going to live like this. My parents have stopped pressuring me after all this time.”

Yun Ling was amused by her description, “Besides weak scholars, aren't there also martial artists?”

“As soon as I see a martial artist, I want to spar with them. How could I be married to one? Anyway, I haven't found someone I love yet, so I'm not getting married!”

  Yun Ling fell silent.

  Love…

What is love? Is habit love? Is care love? Or is compromise love?

She seemed to not know what it felt like to love someone.

“What about you?” Shen Chunxiang suddenly asked, “You're so beautiful, there must be many noble young masters who want to marry you. Do you have anyone you like?”

Yun Ling was unprepared for her sudden question, paused, and was stunned for a moment.

After a moment, she shook her head and said softly,

“Things are fine as they are now.”

Not wanting to continue the topic, Yun Ling changed the subject.

As they chatted, the weather cleared. However, with the ground still wet, it wasn't a good day to go horse riding.

Shen Chunxiang said, “It's stuffy in here. Let's go for a walk in the garden.”

  ……

In the spacious study, Xie Jue sat in a high-backed armchair, holding a celadon teacup with a winding branch pattern. He took a sip, then set the cup down.

He had come today to seek advice from Shen Youjun.

Shen Youjun, though somewhat stubborn, was loyal and had made considerable achievements in military leadership.

“Recently, there have been many incidents among the army's officers. They are mostly young and impetuous, easily swayed by others. If this continues, the morale of the army will suffer. I have come to ask for your guidance, General Shen.”

“I wouldn't dare,” Shen Youjun quickly replied.

With His Highness the Crown Prince personally visiting his residence, Shen Youjun naturally wouldn't refuse to answer.

Although the Crown Prince had previously gained a reputation for being tyrannical and not fit to be a wise ruler, Shen Youjun had initially thought the same.

That's why he had opposed the Crown Prince's new policies so vehemently.

However, the facts proved that this Crown Prince of the Great Jin Dynasty, while a cold and ruthless man, possessed a sharp political mind, decisive and ruthless methods, and remarkable achievements. In less than a year, his prestige had grown day by day.

Now, all the officials in the court followed the Crown Prince's lead without question. They only regretted that the old Emperor hadn't died yet, otherwise, the Crown Prince would have ascended the throne long ago.

Although he was the high and mighty Crown Prince, he could also treat talented people with respect, otherwise, he wouldn't have come to his residence in person.

Shen Youjun felt both touched and honored, and he shared all his life's experience in leading troops.

  Time passed slowly.

The rain outside had stopped sometime ago. Shen Youjun, having spoken passionately, finally paused.

Xie Jue nodded and rose from his armchair. “I have benefited greatly from this visit. Thank you, General Shen.”

Shen Youjun said, “It is my honor to serve Your Highness. It's getting late. Would Your Highness like to stay for a simple meal before leaving?”

“No, I have matters to attend to in the palace,” Xie Jue replied.

Shen Youjun respectfully saw him out. Grand Eunuch An, holding a thin velvet cloak, quickly draped it over Xie Jue.

Xie Jue walked out expressionlessly, Shen Youjun following respectfully behind him to see him off.

Leaving the study, they had to pass through a long corridor.

Xie Jue had been extremely busy these days. Leaving the study, he was exhausted and suffering from a terrible headache. This made his expression even more severe.

Seeing this, Grand Eunuch An couldn't help but say, “Your Highness has been working too hard these days. Once you return to the Palace, you should rest.”

Xie Jue gave him a look, and Grand Eunuch An quickly shut his mouth.

  ……

Shen Chunxiang had planned to demonstrate a martial arts routine for Yun Ling, but as soon as they reached the garden, she saw her cousin approaching with a smile, greeting her politely, “My name is CΓ³ng YΓng, Eldest Miss Xiao. Greetings.”

Yun Ling had just returned the greeting when she heard Cong Ying say dismissively, “Cousin, a girl like you should stop practicing martial arts. If others see you, they'll say you're unladylike. Isn't this embarrassing for Aunt?”

Shen Chunxiang immediately retorted, displeased, “I was thinking the same about your affected mannerisms. Why don't you change that?”

Cong Ying's eyes immediately welled up with tears, she said in a pitiful voice, “I'm doing this for your own good.”

Shen Chunxiang didn't give an inch to her cousin. “Good? You're meddling in things that don't concern you!”

Yun Ling watched the two cousins go back and forth, completely dumbfounded.

She also noticed that after three years, Shen Chunxiang seemed to no longer care about what others thought, so she could retort so brazenly. Because such words no longer hurt her.

People change. To move from hesitation to conviction, how much hardship and pain must one endure before making a decision? Perhaps only they themselves know.

Lost in thought, Yun Ling saw Shen Chunxiang turn back and say to her, “Don't mind her, my cousin is just a bit annoying, haha.”

Cong Ying was so angry she wanted to stomp her feet.

Yun Ling couldn't very well nod in agreement in front of her cousin, and was just about to say something when she caught sight of a familiar, aloof figure out of the corner of her eye, and her body froze.

He should be in the East Palace, why is he at the Shen residence?

Cong Ying's shocked voice immediately reached her ears, “It's His Highness the Crown Prince!”

“His Highness the Crown Prince actually came to the Shen residence!”

Having unexpectedly met him here, Yun Ling's fingers, hanging down below, involuntarily curled up.

She had already made things clear with him—they shouldn't be meeting at this time.

But he is the Crown Prince after all, he is the ruler, and she is a subject. There is no reason not to pay respects to the heir apparent.

Even if she didn't want to see him, now that they had run into each other, she couldn't avoid it.

Just as she was hesitating, Cong Ying suddenly grabbed her wrist.

  ……

Grand Eunuch An saw that The Crown Prince had suddenly stopped for some unknown reason. The expression on his face changed instantly; his thin lips were pressed tightly together, and his brows furrowed.

He followed The Crown Prince's gaze.

The Crown Prince, who always plans strategically and is always victorious, only loses his composure when he sees one person—that person is…

Grand Eunuch An turned his head and, as expected, saw Yun Ling's back in the garden.

It seemed she was trying to avoid them.

Just as he was about to sigh silently, he suddenly saw a rather young girl suddenly grab Yun Ling's hand and walk towards them.

In a short while, along with Miss Shen, the three of them arrived before Xie Jue.

The three of them bowed together.

Yun Ling kept her head bowed, neither humble nor arrogant, her courtesy impeccable. However, it was only impeccable courtesy.

Xie Jue, however, was slow to bid them rise.

The atmosphere in the garden instantly fell silent, utterly still; even the wind seemed to have stopped.

After what felt like a long time, his indifferent voice finally came from above, “Rise.”

When Yun Ling looked up again, she only saw the dark hem of his clothes drifting past her.

  He had already left.

Yun Ling let out a soft breath, paused, and then said to Shen Chunxiang, “It's getting late; I should go back.”

Shen Chunxiang urged her to stay, “Oh, won't you stay for dinner before you leave?”

Yun Ling shook her head. “No, I have something to attend to at home.”

Seeing this, Shen Chunxiang didn't press the matter further, but she whispered in Yun Ling's ear, “You saw His Highness just now, why did you seem unwilling to come forward to greet him? What happened?”

His Highness the Crown Prince has always favored Yun Ling, even going to the Xiao Estate to attend her banquet.

So why did the atmosphere just now seem so off?

And His Highness the Crown Prince didn't even look at Yun Ling before leaving, it was almost as if he were acting rather distantly.

Yun Ling couldn't explain too much to her, only saying, “Nothing, I just got momentarily distracted.”

Shen Chunxiang nodded, and didn't ask further.

Yun Ling then turned and went directly back to the Xiao Estate.

  ……

  Inside the Crown Prince's Palace.

Grand Eunuch An hurried to keep up with the Crown Prince, who was striding quickly into his study. His heart was filled with anxiety; he didn't know what to do.

Eldest Miss Xiao had been so cold towards His Highness, and His Highness's mood was clearly terrible! His expression was gloomy.

It made Grand Eunuch An's spine turn cold.

These past few days, His Highness has been even more terrifying than the Yama of Hell, like he's reverted to how he was when he first ascended to the position of Crown Prince—cold and unapproachable.

He was like this during the years Eldest Miss Xiao was gone, too.

And the reason for all this is that Eldest Miss Xiao and His Highness have become estranged again.

Everything had been fine, yet suddenly it's turned into this.

Sighing inwardly, An Zhong respectfully offered a cup of warm tea. After some thought, he cautiously ventured a question, “Eldest Miss Xiao was at the Shen residence; perhaps she was invited by Miss Shen?”

“Your Highness... why did you leave?”

Xie Jue's mind flashed with the image of her face turning pale the moment she saw him, the way she quickly lowered her head and wouldn't even glance at him. She had rushed back to the Xiao Estate without stopping for a moment.

He felt a terrible headache coming on, his expression as gloomy as the water in a deep well. Unable to control his emotions any longer, he tightened his grip on the teacup, the veins on the back of his hand bulging.

“She avoids me like the plague, she's scheming to stay away from me, am I supposed to chase after her?”

Grand Eunuch An's heart trembled with fear; he didn't dare speak another word.

Xie Jue slammed his cup heavily onto the ground, supporting his forehead with one hand. A surge of rage filled his eyes. “Get out! All of you!”

The palace servants in the hall, terrified, scrambled to leave quickly. Even An Zhong didn't dare to linger.

  ——

Yun Ling returned to the Xiao Estate and saw Xie Jinjia coming over with her round belly. “Ah Ling, you're back!”

“It's raining outside. Did you and Shen Chunxiang learn to ride?”

Yun Ling shook her head. “No, I just sat at the Shen residence for a bit.”

Xie Jinjia pouted. “You finally got to go out, and what a shame that it turned out like this.”

“If I had known, I would have gone with you all. It's just too stuffy in the house.”

She's been forced to stay home because of her pregnancy.

Yun Ling smiled faintly. “It won't be long now, just two or three more months. Once your baby is born, you'll be able to leave the estate and go out to play.”

Mentioning the child, Xie Jinjia's face lit up with a soft glow, her hand caressing her belly.

At this time, Xiao Qibai also returned.

Xie Jinjia immediately went over to him. “Husband.”

There was a light rain outside. Xiao Qibai put down his umbrella, letting a servant take it, and patted the moisture off his clothes before coming over.

His tone was gentle. “It's chilly outside. Why are you two standing here? Be careful not to catch a cold.”

Xie Jinjia said, “I'm wearing a thick cloak, I'm fine. But Ah Ling, she's wearing something rather thin.”

Yun Ling smiled. “I should be going back now. Brother, take Sister-in-law back as well.”

After returning to her room and changing her clothes, someone knocked on the door.

It was her grandmother who sent someone to pass the message and asked her to go. She said she had found a few Buddhist scriptures for her.

When she went, she also had dinner with her grandmother.

Life was just like this: mundane, leisurely, peaceful.

There was no scheming, no coercion.

After getting the scriptures, Yun Ling entered the small Buddhist shrine.

As a daughter, she had never done anything for her mother. She wished to copy some Buddhist scriptures for her, praying for her to be carefree, happy, and peaceful in her next life, no longer burdened by worldly affairs.

  ……

In the deep, quiet night, a carriage suddenly stopped at the gate, and someone got out and knocked on the Xiao Estate's door.

The servant, almost asleep, rubbed his eyes and opened the door, his eyes widening in shock.

In the quiet Buddhist shrine, Yun Ling, facing the candles on either side, lowered her head and carefully copied the scriptures, word by word.

A series of soft footsteps came from outside, and then Yun Ling heard Grand Eunuch An's voice.

The Chief Eunuch of the Imperial Palace, arriving at the Xiao Estate in the middle of the night.

  Her body stiffened.

She put down her pen and turned around, only to see Grand Eunuch An dismissing a young eunuch with a wave of his hand to stand guard outside before entering alone.

He came to Yun Ling, his face filled with anxiety, almost as if he were about to cry. “His Highness has been constantly dealing with state affairs since returning to the Palace, and hasn't had a proper rest. If this continues, even an iron body won't be able to hold up! But His Highness's temper is quite violent, and the palace servants dare not approach him easily. I'm afraid only you, Eldest Miss Xiao, can persuade him!”

“Eldest Miss Xiao, please come to the Palace with me!”

Yun Ling's pale pink fingers, hidden in her sleeves, clenched tightly, her nails digging into her palm.

The night wind rattled the door.

  A long silence followed.

Yun Ling slowly raised her eyes, her voice soft. “In what capacity?”

As she spoke, she turned her head, kneeling again on the prayer mat, steeling her heart. “His Highness and I are no longer master and servant, nor husband and wife.”

“The past is past. I don't wish to enter the Palace, I don't want to be the Crown Princess, and... I never loved him. So, in what capacity should I go and persuade him? At this point, it's best for us not to interfere with each other.”

“Eunuch An, since I have no feelings for him, and I no longer wish to deceive him, I shouldn't provoke him any further. Please go back.”

“I hope you will advise His Highness to take care of his health.”

If she went again, she would be entangled with him once more.

Her wish all along was to be like Shen Chunxiang, to one day be free and unrestrained. And she didn't love him, she disliked his coercion and domineering nature. She never wanted to be his possession, nor did she wish to be confined to the Palace. Having made it clear, there shouldn't be any more lingering attachments.

Yun Ling picked up her brush again, her frail back resolute.

“Eunuch An, you shouldn't have left the Palace at this hour. It's against palace rules.”

An Zhong's face was full of worry. “This servant came here secretly in the middle of the night, risking punishment, but there was simply no other way.”

“This servant doesn't understand how you and His Highness came to this point. His Highness, in his whole life, has only ever had feelings for you. Do you truly have no feelings for His Highness at all?”

But when His Highness was injured, Eldest Miss Xiao cared for him day and night, her eyes even bloodshot – that wasn't fake. Eldest Miss Xiao is always calm and rational, but when His Highness was injured, she cried for a long time – that wasn't fake either!

He had seen it all with his own eyes!

Yun Ling lowered her eyes and remained silent.

An Zhong sighed. Seeing that there was nothing he could do, he could only leave.

Leaving the Xiao Estate, Xiao Xiangzi worriedly said, “Eunuch An, what should we do now?”

An Zhong was even more troubled. “You ask me, who am I going to ask?!”

  ——

Yun Ling did not agree to Grand Eunuch An's request. Having made her decision, she couldn't be indecisive anymore.

In the following days, Yun Ling's life returned to its calm and peaceful rhythm.

She managed the household accounts and some shops left behind by her mother, checking ledgers and managing the businesses daily. She occasionally chatted with her grandmother and the princess, sometimes going to the temple to offer incense and copy scriptures for her biological mother.

Her life was full and never idle.

In the afternoon, with the sun shining pleasantly, Yun Ling and her grandmother were taking a walk in the garden. She had just finished reviewing the accounts of her mother's shops – years of messy records gave her a terrible headache.

After walking two rounds, Yun Ling mentioned something to her grandmother. “Grandmother, as you know, my mother, Lin Ling, was a member of the Lin clan of Yunze. She was forced to flee to the capital because Lin Yihai secretly pursued her.”

“Now that Lin Yihai is dead, the Lin clan has actually been searching for Mother's whereabouts all these years. Last month, I sent a letter to the new Head of the Lin clan, informing him of Mother's death. This morning, I received a reply. The Head of the Lin clan said he has some of Mother's belongings and her former estate, and wishes to send them over.”

Old Madam Xiao naturally agreed. “Those are your mother's things, they should naturally be sent. As for the estate, the Lin clan is kind to return it to you and your brother. You should accept it.”

“The Lin clan is your and Qibai's maternal family, and those are your and Qibai's blood relatives. Now that you and Qibai have grown up and are capable, you should naturally do your best to protect them.”

  Yun Ling nodded. “Yes.”

“Then, your granddaughter will send a message to the Head of the Lin family and ask them to come to the Capital.”

Old Madam Xiao responded, lovingly patting her granddaughter's hand, and then said with a smile, “The flowers in the garden are extraordinarily beautiful this year.”

Changing the subject, she added, “But they can't compare to my granddaughter's radiant beauty.”

Yun Ling blinked. “Grandmother, why did you suddenly say that?”

Old Madam Xiao smiled and shook her head, saying nothing.

Yun Ling couldn't figure out what was going on, but she didn't ask further, and continued her walk with her grandmother.

  ——

On the other side, Grand Tutor Xiao left the Palace after Court.

Behind him, an official in a purple robe, his beard white with age, caught up with him. “Grand Tutor Xiao, wait, wait!”

It was Minister Wang, the Censor-in-chief of the Metropolitan Impeachment Office.

  Grand Tutor Xiao stopped.

Minister Wang walked over and said, “I hear that your granddaughter, who was lost, has been found? Congratulations, congratulations!”

Grand Tutor Xiao flicked his sleeves. “If you have something to say, just say it. At my age, I don't have time for beating around the bush.”

Minister Wang laughed heartily. “I hear your granddaughter is exceptionally well-behaved and capable. Well, I also have a rather unambitious grandson. He's a bit stubborn. He was posted outside the Capital for two years before returning, and he's still unmarried.”

Grand Tutor Xiao frowned and thought for a moment. “Your eldest grandson?”

  “Yes.”

“He's not young anymore, is he?”

“He's twenty-two,” Minister Wang said. “But rest assured, he has absolutely no entanglements with any women. Even if he did, I've already dealt with them. I guarantee your granddaughter won't suffer any grievances.”

Grand Tutor Xiao stroked his beard thoughtfully. Minister Wang wasn't exaggerating.

Minister Wang's eldest grandson was quite learned, and his family was strict, unlike typical spoiled young masters.

He hadn't planned to find a match for his granddaughter so soon after she was found.

But these days, the ministers were like dogs that had smelled blood, many of them coming to inquire.

Some families, attracted to his granddaughter's beauty but disliking that she had been a Shanggong, wanted to take Yun Ling as a concubine or second wife. He had scolded those people back to their senses.

  But this proposal... is acceptable.

After some thought, Grand Tutor Xiao said, “This matter still depends on my granddaughter's wishes. I'll have her grandmother ask her when we get home.”

  Minister Wang readily agreed.

After the two men left, the two young eunuchs guarding the gate cautiously raised their eyes and hurried into the Palace.

  ……

In the vast and imposing hall, shards of porcelain littered the floor, a scene of utter disarray.

Several eunuchs knelt on the ground, trembling.

Xie Jue leaned his arms on the table, his long black hair cascading down. His voice, as cold as a bottomless abyss, echoed, “Repeat that.”

One of the kneeling eunuchs, trembling, stammered, “Lord Wang approached Grand Tutor Xiao to discuss a marriage proposal. His grandson wishes to marry Eldest Miss Xiao. Grand Tutor Xiao seemed... seemed... quite pleased,” He gritted his teeth, “It seems he's about to agree.”

Silence, heavy and suffocating, descended upon the hall after his words.

  ——

Yun Ling recently spent some time copying Buddhist scriptures in the Buddhist hall every night, coming after dinner.

Her grandmother had just sent someone to say she wanted to talk to her about something tomorrow morning. She didn't know what it was about, but she'd find out soon enough.

The light from the candles on either side fell on her fair face, making her appear even more gentle.

Carefully and attentively putting down her final stroke, Yun Ling slowly put down her brush.

At this time, LǜyΔ« came over. “Miss, it's getting late. Would you like to return to your room to rest?”

Yun Ling rubbed her slightly sore wrists and nodded.

LǜyΔ«, carrying a lamp, walked ahead to light the way. The night was quiet and still; the moonlight, like water, spilled down, clear and cold, imbued with a sense of tranquility.

  Suddenly, LǜyΔ« stopped.

“What is it?” Yun Ling asked.

LǜyΔ« stepped aside and whispered, “Miss, Grand Eunuch An has arrived.”

Grand Eunuch An and a young eunuch approached. “Eldest Miss Xiao.”

Yun Ling paused. “Why have you come again, Eunuch An? I've already said I won't enter the Palace.”

Grand Eunuch An quickly replied, “This time, I haven't come on my own accord. His Highness requests your presence.”

“Please come with me, Eldest Miss Xiao.”

  Yun Ling's breath hitched.

After a moment, she refused again. “I cannot go. Please return, Eunuch An.”

Grand Eunuch An's eyes widened. “Eldest Miss Xiao, you are defying a direct order!”

“I am a ¹lady of the inner chambers. How can I enter and leave the Palace at night? If word gets out, it will damage the Xiao family's reputation. Please don't make things difficult for me, Eunuch An. Return and convey my refusal to His Highness.” Yun Ling shook her head and turned to leave.

Before she had taken two steps, a tall figure in dark clothing emerged from the moon gate. He strode quickly toward her, his face grim as he grasped her wrist. “So, even Eunuch An couldn't persuade you, is that it?”

  Yun Ling looked up, trembling.

  He had come himself.

Glossary:

¹“Lady of the inner chambers” refers to a woman who is confined to the private quarters of a household, particularly in traditional Chinese society. It implies a woman who is:

- Not allowed to freely interact with the outside world: She is restricted to the home and its inner spaces.

- Subject to the authority of male family members: Her actions and decisions are often controlled by her father, husband, or other male relatives.

- Primarily responsible for domestic duties: Her role is often focused on managing the household, raising children, and fulfilling the expectations of a wife or daughter.

In Yun Ling's case, it emphasizes her status as a young woman who is expected to behave modestly and avoid public appearances, especially in the context of the Palace. Her refusal to go to the Palace at night reflects her adherence to these social norms and her concern for her family's reputation.

  3. It’s kind of interesting to me- she’s 100% going to be thrust into someone’s possession bc of the time period - given she was a maidservant how in the world did she think she could be independent? This is the time in which women always belong to someone (no matter how disgusting it is) and she’s going to get married - to ppl that are going to think multiple wives is normal. If it was a transmigration story she makes sense but she feels so out of place sometimes πŸ€”πŸ˜…

    1. Yeah, you found the plot hole there. 🀭

    2. She did get a taste of independence as a widow and seemed to really love it. She was raised as an orphan so she expected to have control over her life after she left the palace. She also was a business owner and an official. I think it's hard for her to conceive of someone else making decisions for her now who is not the Crown Prince.

    3. Yeah, her independence, forged in a childhood without parents and strengthened by her later successes, makes her fiercely resistant to anyone controlling her life again.

  5. am i the only one who thinks fl is way too heartless? xie jue, despite his trauma with palace maids, repeatedly compromised for her and treated her well (saving her life twice). how could she not be moved? especially since she was the one who manipulated and used him first.. now that he fell she’s angry? lol

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. But, from my perspective, Yun Ling isn’t heartless—she’s terrified. πŸ˜… She knows one wrong move could get her killed, so even “using” Xie Jue is just survival. Her anger isn’t spite—it’s frustration with being trapped and powerless.

      Delete
  6. This is disappointing. What happened in the past is already in the past. There should be liabilities from getting Xue Jue's help. If not being the crown princess, how else can Yun Ling help him? There doesn't have to be love between them and in fact, she's moved by him. Plus, he said he's willing to wait.

Being honest is one thing but in any relationship in general always require compromises. Xue Jue is learning how to compromise with Yun Ling. Not being the crown princess is ironaically taking advantage of him more.

    1. I get where you’re coming from, but I think the key thing here is power. Yun Ling isn’t negotiating as an equal — she’s a servant who spent her whole life knowing her survival depended on pleasing people above her.

So to her, becoming Crown Princess isn’t a “compromise”, it’s a life sentence. She’s been trapped in the palace since she was a kid, and the moment she finally tasted freedom outside, she knew she never wanted to go back to that cage.

And yes, Xie Jue is learning to compromise, but Yun Ling is learning something too… how to finally choose herself. That doesn’t make her ungrateful or irresponsible. It just means her trauma and fear weigh heavier than the “debt” he thinks she owes him.

She’s not taking advantage of him — she just wants the right to live her own life, not repay kindness with a crown she never asked for. ✨
