The Scheming Minister's Kitchen Maid

CHAPTER 7: EXTRA

1

Much, much later, I learned the truth.

He Xu hadn't originally planned to save himself.

He had clung to life for so many years, driven only by the desire for revenge.

Their original plan was for He Xu to be executed, and on that day, publicly overturn the Lu family's case, reveal He Xu's identity, and create chaos in the Capital.

Then, He Xu would die bravely, to reunite with his parents.

My sudden appearance disrupted his plan and gave him the will to live.

2

I thought I could live a lifetime like this.

“Why did you leave so much silver for the third brother and Brother Sun?”

He Xu pointed outside to where the third brother was sleeping soundly on a tree branch.

“Back then, it was the gardener from the manor who saved me. To rescue me, he killed his own young son. And the third brother is his eldest son. At that time, the third brother was training in the military. His father called him back before he died and entrusted me to him.

When he first saw me, the third brother said, ‘Since my brother died for you, you are my brother from now on.’

As for Sun Er, my mother saved him, and he grew up with me. Back then, it was the Kunlun tribe that conspired with the Grand Minister to harm my father.

After I became the Minister, I took Sun Er to destroy the Kunlun tribe, enslaving all of them. When we were leaving Kunlun, a dark-skinned man nearly killed me, but Sun Er took the sword blow for me.”

My eyes welled up, and I wiped He Xu's face. “All these years, you haven't had it easy.”

He Xu chuckled lightly and began humming again.

“Feeling sorry for me? Then let's go talk on the bed?”

Many years later, He Xu and I had our own child.

The child asked He Xu, “Father, what do you like about Mother? She's so unrefined and silly…”

He Xu flicked the child's forehead.

“Who says your mother is silly? If it weren't for your mother, there wouldn't be your father.”

“Then tell me, Father, why do you like Mother? She's not pretty…”

He Xu lazily basked in the sun, eyes closed.

“Nobody says a flower has to be a sunflower or a rose. If you've experienced the deepest despair, the most vicious evil, you'll understand the profound impact of encountering light, kindness, and the most beautiful soul.

Xin Xi is not the most beautiful, but she made me understand that in this dull world, there are people who live affectionately.”

  9. Thanks for the translation!! This was such a refreshing read because the FL is not conventionally attractive and she's also strong. I know the characters are supposed to be Chinese, but I imagined Xin Xi as Brienne of Tarth from Game of Thrones. They're both "unattractive" and really strong (emotionally and physically) :')

    1. Thank you for reading! 😊 Yeah, Xin Xi really stands out as a female lead—strong, grounded, and not your usual beauty. And wow, imagining her as Brienne of Tarth is actually such a cool comparison! That vibe fits her so well. 💪💙

  11. Aw~~ this novel is so refreshing XD
I like how the FL is super strong, innocent but not naive. And the scene where she finished that garbage is so satisfying~!
    Also, He Xu XD

Thank you very much for the translation, Xyn~!

    1. I’m glad you enjoyed it! The FL really is something else—strong, clever, and a little naive but not a fool 😏. She knows exactly when to cut off toxic relationships ✂️. He Xu’s antics make it even more fun 😆.

Thank you for sticking with my translations all this way 💕. I hope the next ones give you just as much enjoyment! 😄

  12. Kinda makes me sad that the child would speak so depreciatingly about the mother in the end 😔 but overall a great story. Short and sweet

    1. Yeah, that part made me mad too. Who taught this kid to be so rude? 😤 If he were my son, I’d spank his bum bum right away!

  13. I loved this story. Although one thing frustrates me, that the author in this story takes criticising a person's appearance so lightly that even her own son thinks it's his right to do so. Aren't children supposed to find their mothers to be the most beautiful? Just because someone doesn't matches a particular society's standard of beauty doesn't mean that that person is ugly. Chinese authors should really work on the concept of 'beauty is in eye of the beholder'.

    1. After rereading that line, I realized—he wasn’t saying it to anyone but his dad. From another angle, he might’ve been speaking up for his mom. His dad is rich and handsome, so maybe the kid was testing: what if one day dad didn’t like mom anymore? And it’s only a few sentences—we don’t know if he really looks down on her. He could just be curious. Most importantly, he didn’t say it in front of his mom! Imagine if he did—no mom could stand that, and he’d definitely deserve punishment 🤭
