Time-Travel: The Tragic Cannon Fodder Female Supporting Character Makes a Comeback
CHAPTER 16: The 1970s Naive Supporting Girl (16)
When Song Susu returned to the hospital, Li Yanlong and his wife were both there.
Seeing that the girl had trimmed her bangs short, revealing her pretty brows and eyes, the couple could not help but praise her for a while.
After hearing that she had successfully taken back the properties, they became even happier for her.
Song Yuanchao had been bored stiff in the hospital all morning. He really did not want to stay there anymore and quietly whispered to his sister that he wanted to be discharged.
Hearing that, Song Susu casually mentioned that she was planning to head to the countryside tomorrow.
Li Yanlong and his wife did not stop them again. From how she had handled reclaiming the properties, it was clear that Song Susu had truly grown a lot.
Song Yuanchao was especially delighted. After the doctor checked him and prescribed some medicine, everyone packed up, and by the afternoon they were discharged.
Since they were heading to the countryside the next day, although their parents’ work unit dormitory had been cleared out, it had not really been tidied up. They also did not have any daily necessities over there yet, so the siblings temporarily stayed at the Li household.
Song Susu asked around, hoping to find a renovation crew to fix up the work unit dormitory.
Once they came back from the countryside, they could live there for the time being. If a better place came along later, they could always buy another one.
When Wang Yanli heard this, she happened to know someone suitable and helped the siblings take care of the job.
As for the renovation costs, they could settle everything after the work was done. She made sure the siblings would not be taken advantage of.
The brother and sister were deeply grateful and thanked her again and again.
Song Susu originally wanted to invite Uncle Li and Auntie Wang out for a good meal, but the couple refused, worried the kids would spend too much money.
So Song Susu sent her brother to quietly pack a few hearty dishes from the state owned restaurant.
When it was time to eat, Li Yanlong and his wife looked at the spread of meat and fish on the table and could only smile helplessly. They felt both touched and warm inside, and their hearts softened even more toward the two children.
……
Over at the Song family, Song Jianjun had originally planned to go find Song Susu and settle the score after being tricked. Instead, he was arrested by the police halfway there.
The charge was accepting bribes during his time in office.
The rest of the Song family did not fare any better either. They were suspected of illegally occupying someone else’s property and were all summoned to the police station.
Only Song Lili managed to dodge the disaster. She happened to be out shopping with her boyfriend at the time.
Now she was truly scared. She first turned to her boyfriend, Haozi, for help, but he had always listened to his parents. He only comforted her, saying he would go home and ask them, then vanished without a trace.
Anxious and at a loss, Song Lili suddenly remembered that her future aunt by marriage came from a powerful family. She rushed over to beg for help.
She was thrown out without hesitation.
Song Jiabao’s fiancée was the youngest daughter of his superior, a high ranking leader.
Miss Zhang was only twenty eight this year. She had once had a brief marriage that ended in divorce due to domestic violence. They had been married for half a year and had no children.
She chose Song Jiabao because the Song family had Li Yanlong backing them. His job was stable and easy, he looked decent enough, and he had never been married before.
But now? Starting yesterday, stories about the Song family had been spreading all over their social circle. Li Yanlong was furious and directly stripped every member of the Song family of their positions.
Anyone who had heard the news lately was already avoiding the Song family like the plague. Who would dare help them now.
Li Yanlong was, after all, the top leader of his unit. In this small local circle, he carried both reputation and authority. On top of that, the Song family’s actions were truly shameless.
The Zhang family not only refused to acknowledge the engagement anymore, but out of anger at being deceived, they also quietly lent a hand behind the scenes to bring the Song family down.
Song Lili ran around begging everyone she could think of, but not a single person was willing to help her.
Dejected, she headed back home, only to run straight into people from the Educated Youth Office at her doorstep. They took her away on the spot.
Someone had reported that she was originally the one who should have gone to the countryside, but the Song family had deliberately pulled strings to make Song Susu take her place instead.
Truth be told, this kind of thing was not rare in certain families. The Educated Youth Office often turned a blind eye to it.
Unfortunately for the Song family, their luck had completely run out. Too many people were eager to stir up trouble for them. Reports kept piling in one after another, leaving the office with no choice but to act.
——
The next day,
Song Susu heard about the Song family and could only think they were reaping what they sowed.
She took her brother to the local office and officially moved their household registration out of the Song family.
That way, the siblings were completely severed from that household.
Song Susu’s own registration was still in the countryside and hadn’t been moved back yet. Song Yuanchao’s case was special, so the office temporarily attached him there out of humanitarian consideration. It was only a temporary measure with a time limit.
Once Song Susu’s registration was back in place, the two of them would go with their property certificates to get new registrations.
With everything settled, the siblings went to the department store to pick up some daily necessities.
After having breakfast at the Li family’s, they packed their things and got ready to leave.
Before leaving, Song Susu suddenly remembered the woman Song Jiabao had been keeping. According to the landlord mother and son, there might even be a capitalist connection, which in this era was definitely risky.
Song Susu, unwilling to leave it unchecked, gave Uncle Li a careful reminder.
If the woman turned out to be decent, it didn’t matter.
If she was trouble, better to deal with her early to avoid more complications later.
Li Yanlong frowned at the news as well. Messing around and protecting a capitalist? Both were serious offenses.
He immediately nodded. “Alright, Uncle Li will take care of it. You don’t have to worry.”
Finally, the Li couple drove the two of them to the station.
Wang Yanli had prepared lunch boxes with travel-friendly snacks: white-flour steamed buns with brown sugar, meat buns, some beef jerky, and a small cloth bag with candies and dried fruits.
There was also a large military-style water bottle, filled with hot water.
Li Yanlong had already bought their train tickets in advance.
Even so, the two adults couldn’t help worrying and gave the kids a long list of instructions.
“Life in the countryside can be tricky. Try not to go to remote places. If you want something to eat, you can use money to buy from locals, but don’t show off any cash. Finish your business quickly and come home, and if anything happens, call Uncle Li right away.”
A warm feeling rose in Song Susu’s chest, while Song Yuanchao’s eyes welled up and he quietly wiped his tears.
Song Susu put her hand on her brother's shoulder and smiled as she agreed, “Got it, Uncle Li.”
The siblings boarded the train, and the Li couple stayed behind, watching them go.
Song Yuanchao waved through tears, leaning against the window and shouting, “Uncle Li, Auntie Wang, go back! I’ll listen to my sister and take good care of her.”
From afar, the Li couple seemed to hear him and waved back with a smile.
Song Susu comforted her brother, “It’s okay. We’ll just be away for a little while before we come back.”
Song Yuanchao wiped his tears, feeling a little embarrassed, and nodded quietly. “Sis, you won’t laugh at me, right? Uncle Li has been so good to us, like a dad. I just saw them there and suddenly felt like crying.”
Song Susu stroked his head. “How could I laugh at you? You’re a grateful, good kid. Uncle Li and his family have been really kind to us. We’ll have chances to repay them properly later.”
Hearing that, Song Yuanchao beamed and nodded happily. “Okay.”
……
The train traveled for a day, and it was getting dark when they finally arrived at their destination.
They got off in the county town, still some distance from the village below.
Song Susu’s assigned village was Xingling Village, but the roads there were a bit rough, and it was too late to travel safely.
She decided to stay in the county town for the night with her brother.
After a full day on the train, surviving on nothing but dry rations, Song Susu was craving a proper hot meal.
Luckily, some restaurants were still open, so she took Song Yuanchao out for a proper dinner.
Passing by a small eatery, the smell of fresh meat pancakes and mutton soup wafted out. The cooks and staff were having a meal in the hall, and the aroma was irresistible.
Song Susu went up to ask if they sold food, and the staff, seeing the siblings just off the train, kindly served them two bowls.
They only took the payment for the food and didn’t ask for food tickets.
Song Susu also bought half a pound of meat pancakes to go.
The two of them ate happily. Song Yuanchao was sweating a little from the pepper in the mutton soup, slurping carefully between bites.
“Sis, this mutton soup is so good! When we come back, we have to eat it again.”
Song Susu handed him a piece of meat pancake and smiled. “Okay, deal.”
