Because she was worried those hooligans might come back looking for trouble, Liu Yingzi didn’t dare take everyone too far. She stopped by to buy a few eggs from a local villager along the way, then headed back to the educated youth settlement.
They hurried back before the other educated youths returned. Liu Yingzi used her own grain rations to prepare dinner, and Song Susu’s group didn’t just sit around. They helped wherever they could.
Dinner was a hearty cabbage and glass noodle stew, corn flatbread, and a bowl of steamed egg custard.
After they finished eating, Liu Yingzi brought out her washbasin and towel and told Song Susu to go freshen up.
The countryside was full of dusty slopes and dirt paths, and after cooking over the fire, their faces were coated with ash and grime.
Song Susu filled a basin with water and quickly washed her face and hands, helping her younger brother do the same.

“Go! Go fry a plate of peanuts.”

Hearing that, the boy’s eyes turned red too. He wiped them with the back of his cracked hand and whispered, “Don’t be afraid. When I grow up, I’ll report him to the police. They’ll arrest him, and then he’ll be executed!”

After wandering around for a while, Tian Shiwu gathered six or seven local hooligans. Just to be safe, he even called his cousin Tian Baoguo over, playing it smart so their uncle could step in and cover for them if anything went wrong.
They soon found out that Song Susu and the others were staying at the Ge family’s house.
He told Niu Dayong to take two men to the Ge house and throw stones, while he and his cousin led the rest to hide nearby in ambush.
When stones started hitting the Ge family’s house, the elderly couple came out first to check what was happening. Soon after, Cao Xiaojun also came out. The moment he spotted the familiar figure of Niu Dayong outside the wall, he immediately chased after him.

He pushed the door open and walked straight in.
Liu Yingzi had already been uneasy after hearing the commotion outside. She had just finished getting dressed and was about to take Song Susu and the others to hide at the neighboring educated youth quarters.
Suddenly, they saw Tian Shiwu push the door open and walk in.
Liu Yingzi’s face turned pale as she hurriedly shouted, “Who let you in! The educated youth quarters are right next door. I’m calling people, you’d better leave now!”
Tian Shiwu glanced at the dark-faced Liu Yingzi and said with obvious disgust, “Shut up! If you want to leave then get lost. Don’t ruin my fun.”
Panic flashed across Liu Yingzi’s face. After all, she was only eighteen. Her hand trembled as she grabbed Song Susu’s.
“Susu, I’ll hold him off. You run. Go to the educated youth quarters and find the men for help.”
Song Susu tightened her grip on her hand and reassured her, “Yingzi, don’t be afraid. You go out. I know a bit of self-defense, I won’t suffer.”
After speaking, Song Susu gave her younger brother Song Yuanchao a meaningful look.
Understanding his sister’s plan, he did not hesitate and immediately slipped out the door and ran.
Tian Shiwu failed to grab the brat in time and simply started taking off his clothes. Calling for reinforcements did not bother him. Most people in the village did not dare offend him anyway, and by the time anyone arrived, it would already be too late.

Tian Shiwu cried out in pain, clutching his stomach and gasping.
Liu Yingzi was so shocked that her tears stopped. She hurriedly wiped her eyes.
“So you take off your clothes just to get beaten? Fine, I’ll grant your wish.”
Rolling her wrists, Song Susu walked closer, grabbed a wooden plank from behind the door, and brought it down hard against the soft parts of his body.
“Ahh!”

After more than ten strikes, Tian Shiwu curled up in the corner by the door, begging for mercy, drenched in sweat and trembling from the pain.
