Time-Travel: The Tragic Cannon Fodder Female Supporting Character Makes a Comeback

CHAPTER 91: The Eldest Sister of the 90s Quits Sacrificing Herself (3)

Now that she had finally shaken off those freeloading burdens, it was time to return to school properly. She refused to waste her youth ever again. Everything needed to get back on track.

Zhao Fuyao handled things efficiently. The very next morning, she found the best high school in Haishi. After passing the entrance assessment, she was directly admitted into senior year.

Based on her age, she should have been in senior year already. It was only because the Zhao family had forced the original owner to stay behind and care for her younger siblings that she had lost a year of schooling.

But enrollment also involved student registration records, so Zhao Fuyao still needed to make a trip back to the neighboring city to get documentation from her old school.

  ……

The next day, Zhao Fuyao returned to the county where the original owner used to live.

She headed straight for the school, but before she could even step inside, Zhao Pandi and Zhao Handi suddenly rushed out and blocked her path.

“Big Sister! We finally found you!”

“Tell us! Were you the one who took all of Mom and Dad’s compensation money? Why do you get to keep all of it? We deserve a share too! Give us our money back!”

The two sisters grabbed one of Zhao Fuyao’s arms each.

Zhao Fuyao rolled her eyes and shook them off in one motion.

“You two idiots. If you got the money now before even becoming adults, it’d all get snatched away by someone else. You’d probably get sold off and still help count the money for them.”

Zhao Pandi completely failed to catch the meaning behind her words and immediately shouted back, “Stop pretending you care! You just want to keep it all for yourself. Grandpa and Grandma can hold onto our share for us. We don’t need your fake kindness!”

Zhao Fuyao nearly laughed from sheer disbelief. She poked Zhao Pandi right on the forehead as she scolded her.

“I think your brain’s been completely washed! Those two old people are already so old, and right now Uncle is their only son left. Do you really think they’d value you granddaughters more than their own son? Once the old couple passes away, Uncle will just keep the money for himself and leave it to his own kids. Why would any of it go to you?”

Zhao Pandi covered the spot on her head that had been poked and snapped back through gritted teeth, “I think you’re just jealous. Uncle and Auntie treat us well. They’d never do something like that.”

“And why do you think they treat you well? Because there’s something to gain from it. If you had no money, who’d bother with you? Why didn’t they dote on you before this?”

Zhao Pandi choked on her words.

Back then, Uncle and Auntie really had not treated them very kindly.

The reason Zhao Fuyao was wasting so much breath talking to these two idiots was mainly to keep them stable for now. Otherwise, the only people benefiting in the end would be the Zhao family.

In the previous life, the original owner had managed to hold onto the money and raise her younger siblings because the old Zhao couple returned to their hometown during harvest season and lit a coal stove for heating. The coal had not been sealed properly, and the next morning they were found dead from poisoning.

Once they died, the compensation money legally belonged only to the five siblings. Uncle Zhao would no longer have any claim to it.

Judging by the timeline, that would happen in about half a month. So before then, Zhao Fuyao still needed to keep these two sisters pacified.

Zhao Handi fell into thought for a moment before speaking up first.

“Big Sister, we’re family after all, so of course you’re more trustworthy. But we can’t survive without any money either. Give us the family savings passbook and the cash first.”

Their parents should still have a few thousand yuan in savings, plus several hundred in cash kept at home. They could at least get that first.

As for the compensation money, Grandpa, Grandma, and Uncle really were not trustworthy. It was probably safer letting her eldest sister hold onto it for now.

Based on what she knew about her eldest sister, she had always been frugal to the point of stinginess and could never bear to spend money recklessly. Even though her temperament had changed these past two days, after spending years taking care of them, the money was still safest with her.

Once they became adults next year and no longer needed guardians, they could take it back then.

Zhao Pandi shot her younger sister an annoyed glare.

The compensation money was obviously worth way more than the cash and savings. Was her sister stupid or what?

Zhao Handi pulled her sister aside and whispered to her for quite a while.

“If the money stays with Big Sister, she’s so stingy she definitely won’t bear to spend it. Besides, we’re still on the same household registration. If she refuses to give it to us later, we can still sue her for it. But if Grandpa and Grandma get their hands on it, they’ll probably spend it all on Uncle’s family. By then, we won’t even have anywhere to argue our case.”

Zhao Pandi was left speechless and could only listen to her younger sister. When she looked back at Zhao Fuyao, her face still carried some disdain, but she was no longer as hostile as before.

Zhao Fuyao, meanwhile, gave Zhao Handi an extra glance.

No wonder she had managed to get into a top-tier university in the previous life, later became a civil servant, and eventually married well. The girl really did have a bit of brains.

Compared to the foolish Zhao Pandi, who had barely managed to get into a junior college before getting pregnant and married shortly after starting work, Zhao Handi’s life had turned out far better. Zhao Pandi had married the wrong man, got bullied by her in-laws, and despite being a college student in the 90s, still ended up trapped as a housewife, spending her days fighting and shouting in neighborhood quarrels, unable to escape endless domestic drama.

The two sisters had ended up living completely different lives.

But compared to Zhao Pandi, Zhao Handi was actually even worse.

She was smart enough to know perfectly well how much her eldest sister had sacrificed for the family, yet she still chose to stay silent and join in squeezing her dry. In the end, even when she clearly had money, she still refused to pay for her eldest sister’s medical treatment.

Zhao Fuyao suppressed the urge to slap both of them again and said impatiently, “Go home and wait first. Let me finish my business at school.”

Zhao Handi immediately refused. “No. What if you run away again?”

“Exactly. Hurry up and give us the money, or I’ll tell Grandpa and Grandma to come drag you back. They already reported you to the police two days ago. If they catch you, they’ll definitely take you to the station,” Zhao Pandi threatened.

Zhao Fuyao looked at her like she was an idiot.

“And why do you think they called the police? Because they want to steal our family’s money. Grandpa and Grandma have always favored boys over girls. Every other sentence out of their mouths is ‘worthless girls.’ If the money lands in their hands, do you seriously think you’ll get a share?”

Zhao Pandi choked again, then gritted her teeth and snapped, “We don’t even have a single cent on us right now. Either way, you have to give us money.”

Zhao Fuyao pulled two hundred yuan from her pocket and handed it to the sisters, saying irritably, “This is all I’ve got on me. The bankbook was opened using Mom and Dad’s IDs, so it’s not that easy to withdraw money from it. There was only three hundred in cash at home total. Giving each of you a hundred is already generous enough.”

Zhao Pandi snatched the money over and muttered, “That’s way too little. You still have all that compensation money.”

“Did you even used to get pocket money before? Mom and Dad giving you five yuan a month was enough to make you happy. Be satisfied with a hundred. What, you planning to carry around a pile of cash just to show off? If Grandpa and Grandma see it, those two old geezers will definitely confiscate it.”

Zhao Handi accepted the money, tugged lightly on her sister’s sleeve, and said, “Big Sis, then from now on, our allowance should be a hundred every month. You have to give it to us on time.”

“Yeah! Every month from now on,” Zhao Pandi quickly echoed.

Her eyes were already sparkling. A hundred yuan a month! Wouldn’t that mean she could buy whatever she wanted?

Zhao Fuyao let out a faint scoff and couldn’t be bothered arguing with them anymore. “Sure.”

Agreeing was one thing. Whether she’d actually give it later was another story.

After sending the two sisters away, Zhao Fuyao headed into the school to handle the paperwork.

She never returned to the Zhao family home and went straight back to Haishi instead.

Once her enrollment was finalized, Zhao Fuyao followed the school’s requirements and cut her waist length hair into a short style that stopped neatly by her ears.

Compared to long hair, the short cut highlighted her sharp, striking features even more, giving her an androgynous kind of beauty.

Dressed in the loose high school uniform, with her short hair framing her face, her features stood out effortlessly.

Zhao Fuyao transferred into Class Two of the third year.

The teacher asked her to come up front and introduce herself, and she did so confidently and naturally, earning warm applause from the entire class.

After class, not only did the girls gather around wanting to be friends and complimenting how pretty she was, even the boys crowded over, eagerly asking her all sorts of questions.
