Time-Travel: The Tragic Cannon Fodder Female Supporting Character Makes a Comeback
CHAPTER 124: The 1980s Villain’s Biological Mother (17)
The Capital.
Mu Shuhui brought the children back to their new home.
The two children had been feeling a little down because they were sad to leave the place and friends they had spent two years with.
But the moment they saw their new home, they were so stunned that they couldn’t say a word.
The house was spacious and beautifully decorated, with an impressive look to it. It was even bigger and nicer than their place in the county town.
Seven-year-old Mu Youran carefully asked her mother, “Mom, did we rent this house too?”
Mu Shuhui smiled and told her daughter, “No. Mom bought it. It belongs to us. From now on, this is our home.”
Mu Youran was stunned at first, then immediately burst with excitement. She turned to her brother. “Brother! Did you hear that? Mom said this house belongs to us!”
Their family finally had a home of their own!
Nine-year-old Mu Rufeng had grown into a handsome boy. He was tall and slender, and when he saw his little sister’s adorable, slightly dazed expression, he smiled and gently patted her head.
“Mm. I heard her.”
He looked at his mother with warmth in his eyes and said seriously, “Mom, it must have been hard for you to buy such a big house. You’ve worked so hard for us. When I grow up and become capable, you won’t have to work so hard anymore. I’ll take good care of you and my sister.”
Mu Shuhui rarely heard her son say so much at once, so she smiled and teased him, “All right. I’ll retire early and let you take care of me then.”
Mu Youran ran around the house, looking at everything with wide-eyed curiosity. Before long, she came rushing back and happily jumped into her mother’s arms.
She hugged her mother tightly, looking completely satisfied. Her little face was full of pride as she praised her, “Mom, you’re the best mom in the whole world! You’re amazing! We’ll never have to move again.”
Mu Shuhui couldn’t help laughing at her daughter’s adorable reaction. She hugged her and kissed her cheek. “With two sweet-talking kids like you, Mom is pretty happy too.”
The joy of having a new home of their own quickly washed away the sadness of leaving everything behind.
The two children each picked a bedroom, and Mu Shuhui let them decorate their rooms however they liked. She also had them write down everything they needed so they could go shopping for it the next day.
The two children had always been quite independent, so they immediately got to work, carefully making a list of everything they were missing.
……
That afternoon, after leaving the two children at home to play, Mu Shuhui went to register her household first. She owned two properties, so the process went smoothly.
That evening, the three of them stayed home. The train ride had been a little tiring, so they went back to their rooms and turned in early.
The next morning, the whole family went out for a big shopping trip.
They spent the entire day getting everything the new home was missing, and by the end of it, Mu Shuhui and the children had the place all set up.
Since it was summer vacation and the children weren’t in a hurry to start school, she spent the next few days taking them around the city.
Partly, it was so they could get familiar with the streets and neighborhoods. More importantly, she wanted them to get used to this unfamiliar city.
In the children’s eyes, the county town had already seemed incredibly prosperous. Little did they know that a big city was on an entirely different level, with all kinds of things they had never seen before.
The two children were fascinated and delighted by everything.
Mu Shuhui took them out for coffee, bought them chocolate, and even took them to the movies. Basically, as long as something caught their interest, she was happy to indulge them.
And just like that, the family of three spent an entire month enjoying their carefree new life.
During that time, Mu Shuhui also found schools for both children.
Mu Youran would be starting first grade, while her older brother Mu Rufeng would be entering third grade. They would be attending the same elementary school, so the siblings could look out for each other.
The apartment building Mu Shuhui bought was seven stories tall, and she had purchased the fifth-floor unit, mainly because it got plenty of natural light.
There were two apartments on each floor. They had been living there for over a month, but Mu Shuhui had never seen anyone living in the unit across from them.
That changed just before the children were due to start school, when someone finally moved in across the hall.
Mu Shuhui only knew that someone had moved in. She hadn’t actually met them yet.
Then, the next day, her new neighbor came knocking on the door.
When Mu Shuhui opened it, she saw an unfamiliar woman with a little girl of about seven or eight standing behind her.
Before Mu Shuhui could say anything, the woman smiled and introduced herself.
“My name is Xia Li, and this is my daughter, Xia Duoduo. We just moved into the apartment across from you. I made some pastries myself and put together a little gift box for you. I hope you’ll accept it.”
Out of politeness, Mu Shuhui nodded, but gently pushed the gift box back toward her. “Thank you, but that’s not necessary. You can save it for your daughter.”
They didn’t know each other at all, and Mu Shuhui knew nothing about what kind of person she was. It wouldn’t be appropriate to accept a gift from a complete stranger so casually.
Xia Li froze, clearly not expecting her to refuse.
In the past, whenever she moved somewhere new, she would build closer relationships with her neighbors by giving them gifts. That way, if she ever needed a helping hand, she could count on them.
She never skimped on the gifts either. The gift boxes were always beautifully packaged and looked expensive, so most people wouldn’t refuse them. This was the first time someone had actually turned her down.
She took a good look at Mu Shuhui. The other woman wasn’t as strikingly beautiful as she was. She had a more delicate, understated look, but there was a calm, composed air about her.
Even in simple clothes, she somehow managed to make them look stylish. Her casually braided ponytail fell over her shoulder, and for some reason, her whole appearance gave off an air of understated elegance and wealth.
She looked like she might be well-off. Xia Li was quick to read the situation and knew when to keep her distance, so she immediately smiled and said, “I’m sorry. I overstepped. May I ask your surname?”
“I’m Mu,” Mu Shuhui replied casually.
Xia Li smiled, but didn’t know what else to say. She quickly pulled her daughter over and prompted her to greet the neighbor.
“Duoduo, say hello to Auntie Mu. We have to be polite when greeting people.”
Xia Duoduo wore two long braids. Her little face was pretty and fair, and she looked like she would grow into a beauty. But there was a hint of arrogance in her eyes as she casually called out, “Hello, Auntie.”
Then she looked at her mother in confusion. “Mom, why isn’t this auntie inviting us inside? My legs are tired from standing here.”
“Good grief, you little rascal. You’ve only taken a few steps and you’re already tired?”
After saying that, Xia Li deliberately glanced at Mu Shuhui with an apologetic look. “She’s still young and doesn’t know when to keep her mouth shut. Comrade Mu, please don’t take it to heart.”
Mu Shuhui didn’t particularly like this mother and daughter. They seemed a little too deliberate, especially the child. Compared to her own two children, she was far less endearing.
So Mu Shuhui was quite straightforward. “The house really isn’t convenient for having guests over. Was there anything else you two needed?”
Xia Li’s expression stiffened slightly. She awkwardly smiled and said, “No, that’s all. We won’t bother you anymore.”
Mu Shuhui nodded and simply closed the door.
After being turned away, Xia Li’s face immediately fell. Her brows furrowed, clearly unhappy with the way she had been treated.
Xia Duoduo also pouted, twirling a strand of her long hair around her finger as she complained, “Mom, that auntie isn’t as pretty as you. She must be jealous because you’re so beautiful, so that’s why she was so mean.”
“Shh, keep your voice down! What if she hears you? Let’s go home…”
……
Over the next few days, Mu Shuhui barely ran into the neighbors across the hall.
That changed once school started and she took the two children to register.
She ran into them at school again.
Mu Shuhui had brought her son and daughter, while Xia Li was also holding the hands of two children. The two looked about the same age, and they seemed to be twins, a boy and a girl.
“What a coincidence, Comrade Mu. You’re here to register your children too?” Xia Li greeted her with a smile.
Mu Shuhui nodded. “Yes.”
Xia Li tucked her hair behind her ear and smiled. “We really are quite fated to keep running into each other. We both have a son and a daughter, our children go to the same school, and we even live across the hall from each other.”
Then she affectionately took her son’s hand and said, “You met my daughter Duoduo yesterday. This is my son, Xia Zichen. Why don’t I introduce all the children? They can get to know each other and play together.”
Mu Shuhui froze when she heard the name. Why did it sound so familiar?
Xia Zichen…
Wasn’t he the male lead in the story?
