Heavenly Eyes 3: A Song of Hope
CHAPTER 6
26.
I thought I could help Liang Zhen. I thought everything would get better.
But when I got home, I received the news of her death.
Aunt Xu cried as she said, “Tongtong, it's Auntie's fault. Auntie didn't watch over her.
But her mother came to demand her back, and I couldn't keep her!
Apparently, she touched an electrical outlet and was electrocuted. When they pulled her out, she was completely charred. She was still wearing your school uniform.”
In an instant, the world spun, and I felt unsteady on my feet.
Shen Chen supported me from behind, anxiously asking, “Sister! Are you okay?”
But I couldn't quite hear him. My body swayed, and I almost fell backward.
Compared with us neighbors, the woman who is Liang Zhen's biological mother was not sad at all.
She was still cursing at the doorway.
“That girl was just here to bring misfortune. Good riddance!”
Her boyfriend tried to quiet her, but she only cursed louder.
“You feel sorry for that little bitch? Then go die with her!”
They didn't hold a funeral for Liang Zhen; they were going to take her body directly to the crematorium.
I insisted on calling the police and demanding an autopsy for Liang Zhen, and almost got attacked with a knife by Liang Zhen's mother.
Her boyfriend also warned me to mind my own business or face the consequences.
I questioned Liang Zhen's mother, “Are you really her mother? If you didn't love her, why did you give birth to her in the first place? Aren't you afraid of karma for doing this?”
The woman was truly insane; she threw a kitchen knife at me.
If Shen Chen hadn't pulled me away, I would have been seriously injured.
Shen Chen tried to console me, “Sister, let it go. Everyone has their own destiny.”
But I refused to give up. Wiping away my tears, I returned to my room and pulled out yellow paper, vermillion ink, and a brush from under my bed.
Grandma Yueying giggled, fanning herself. “Oh? Getting serious, are we?”
I turned to her. “You've benefited from my incense offerings; you have to help me!”
Grandma Yueying laughed. “Shen Tong, are you sure? This is a deed that harms your virtue!”
I sneered. “What good are all the merits I've accumulated? In the end, I couldn't even protect a single person.”
27.
Using my abilities, I disrupted the door gods protecting Liang Zhen's home, causing her mother and her boyfriend to experience mental distress, misfortune, and general bad luck.
Grandma Yueying called a few of her friends, and they went to harass them daily, making them constantly anxious and on edge.
The couple bickered endlessly, revealing each other's secrets and fighting fiercely. Their constant noise disturbed the neighborhood.
Finally, their fighting annoyed their neighbors, who called the police.
Initially arrested for disturbing the peace, the couple, in their agitated state, ended up confessing everything to the police.
It turned out that Liang Zhen had been beaten to death by her mother, who then burned her body to make it look like an electrocution.
Her boyfriend had been sexually abusing the intellectually disabled minor for a long time and helped cover up the murder, making him an accomplice. One received the death penalty, and the other faced life imprisonment.
On the seventh day after Liang Zhen's death, she didn't return to her own home; she came to my room.
Looking at her charred remains, I gently told her, “You've gone to the wrong place.”
The next day, she came again.
I told her, “Your mother and uncle have been brought to justice. You can rest now.”
On the third day, she came again.
Remembering my earlier words, I embraced her.
“Stay here. You don't need to go.”
Liang Zhen smiled happily. She no longer looked charred but clean and bright, wearing the school uniform I had given her.
Later, I made a memorial tablet for her and placed it in my closet, alongside those of Li Zhuangzhuang and Grandma Yueying.
Grandma Yueying was speechless.
“Shen Tong! Offering tributes to everything will only harm you!”
I shrugged nonchalantly.
In life, all that matters is having a clear conscience.
I promised to protect Liang Zhen and give her a home.
28: Epilogue.
Later, I learned that the boy who had been following Xia Yuan was actually her twin brother. He had died at birth, so his spirit lingered, unable to find peace.
Because he died at birth, his name was Xia Shang.
Xia Shang himself told me this, but I didn't believe it.
Because his soul felt ancient and powerful to me, and not human; more like some kind of beast.
Perhaps only I could see him; occasionally, we'd meet on the way to school, and we'd exchange sarcastic remarks.
He gave me the impression of being cunning, sarcastic, arrogant, and self-important.
He possessed every flaw a human could have, yet lacked any virtue.
We learned from the Hua Yi sect that with each soul-retrieving experience, more Yin points open up on one's body.
Without careful attention, stray spirits and ghosts might try to possess us.
But I was born with extraordinary spiritual energy; ordinary evil spirits couldn't get close to me.
Xia Shang was the type of evil spirit who drooled at the sight of me.
But every time he tried to possess my body, I'd drive him away with my spells.
Eventually, he calmed down.
However, he had a truly foul mouth.
“Shen Tong, your Heavenly Eye body is a top-grade vessel, wasted on you. If you die someday, can I have this body?”
Me: “Get lost!”
Days went by uneventfully.
Until one day, I noticed Xia Yuan hadn't come to school, and Xia Shang had disappeared.
Later, I heard that a terrible thing had happened to her family. Her father had gone bankrupt and committed suicide by jumping from a building. Her mother took her older sister and emigrated abroad, leaving Xia Yuan an orphan who was sent to an orphanage.
One day, on my way home, I encountered Xia Shang, battered and bruised.
His spirit body was almost transparent, as if it were about to dissipate. In his hand, he held a pitch-black statue of a child, exuding an incredibly sinister aura—clearly not made of ordinary wood or clay.
He struggled to place the statue in my hand before collapsing.
I was speechless. “Hey! I didn't say I'd help you! We're not that close!
Explain yourself before you pass out…”
However, no one answered me.
Not only did he fail to respond, but he also transformed into a wisp of smoke and disappeared into the statue.
I had no choice but to take him home and place the statue next to Liang Zhen's memorial tablet.
Grandma Yueying was furious, jumping up and down as she scolded me.
“Shen Tong! I told you, offering tributes to everything will really harm you!”
Me: “Yeah, yeah, I know.”
