My Darling, Coax Me.

CHAPTER 100: Xiao Qibai x Xie Jinjia 6 - He Still Waited For Her For Many Years. (End)

Xie Jinjia watched his retreating figure, standing there dazedly.

She didn't understand what he meant.

Why would he be the one punished if she never found love?

She pondered for a long time, unable to decipher the meaning in his words. She also wondered if he would believe her, if he would forgive her.

This marriage to him was ultimately forced upon him. Was she right or wrong to marry into the Xiao family?

    ——

  The night of the wedding.

All the guests who had come to celebrate had left. The commotion faded, and the bridal chamber gradually grew quiet.

Xiao Qibai was still outside, entertaining guests.

Having achieved her heart's desire and married the man she had longed for, Xie Jinjia should have been overjoyed. But the means by which she had entered this marriage were not entirely honorable, and a touch of anxiety and nervousness lingered in her heart.

From this day forward, she would be Xiao Qibai's wife. She would spend her life in the Xiao family, living in harmony with her husband, raising children.

All of this was what she had longed for, a wish fulfilled, but only for her.

Only she didn't know Xiao Qibai's heart. Their relationship had always been one of her pursuing him, while he had repeatedly rejected her and never once considered marrying her.

Yes, someone as brilliant and honorable as Xiao Qibai must despise those who use dirty tactics.

Her delicate fingers fidgeted on her lap, twisting nervously.

Her maid whispered in her ear, “Princess, would you like some water?”

Xie Jinjia felt a dryness in her throat. She reached out, “Pour me a cup.”

A cup of clear tea was handed to her. Xie Jinjia took it and drank it down in one gulp. She handed the cup back, “Another one.”

At that moment, the person who had taken the cup didn't respond.

What was going on? Why wasn't the maid answering?

Xie Jinjia lowered her fan (扇子 -shànzi) and looked up, only to see Xiao Qibai, dressed in his wedding attire, standing by the table pouring her tea. She realized then how quiet the room was; at some point, the maids and the mamas had all withdrawn.

The gurgling sound of the tea filled the room. After a while, Xiao Qibai walked over, handed her the cup, and asked, “Are you hungry?”

His voice was his usual gentle tone.

Xie Jinjia unconsciously licked her lips, took the teacup, and drank it all in one go. Then she burped, shook her head, and said, “No, I'm not hungry.”

She had even drunk herself full of water.

She extended her hand, offering him the empty cup again.

Xiao Qibai didn't say anything. He dutifully took the cup and set it down.

The wedding candles burned brightly in the room, their flickering light illuminating his sharp profile. His jawline was clear and strong, his nose high-bridged, his lips a soft red. His figure was tall and straight; even the bright red wedding attire couldn't conceal his scholarly aura. His long, dark lashes drooped slightly. He was like a jade carving, breathtakingly handsome.

Xie Jinjia's eyes flickered. As he bent to pour wine, she seemed to catch a glimpse of his strong Adam's apple… Her heart beat faster and faster. She stammered, “How did you come back so soon? Don't you have to entertain the guests?”

“I'm really not a good drinker. If I drank any more, I'm afraid I'd get drunk.” Xiao Qibai came over with two cups of wine, handing one to her.

It was time for the wedding wine ceremony.

Xie Jinjia felt a surge of excitement. She took the cup, slipped her arm through his, and tilted her head, drinking the wine in one gulp again. But unexpectedly, the wine was incredibly strong, burning her throat.

Xiao Qibai gently patted her back, “Why are you drinking so fast?”

Xie Jinjia was so choked she couldn't speak. When she looked up again, her originally pale pink face was flushed crimson.

“Don't drink anymore in the future,” Xiao Qibai remembered her unruly behavior when she was drunk.

“Mm-hmm,” Xie Jinjia nodded repeatedly in agreement.

Tonight, it seemed like he had been the one taking care of her the whole time.

Xie Jinjia, who was used to being served by maids, only now realized this. Shouldn't she be the one serving her husband? Xie Jinjia wondered, somewhat bewildered.

By this time, the maids had brought in hot water, and Xie Jinjia got up and went to the bathroom to bathe. When she came out, Xiao Qibai had also finished bathing. He was wearing moon-white sleeping clothes and was leaning against a chaise lounge reading a book.

After the bath, the maids left again. After the door closed, the room became quiet once more.

Xiao Qibai also got up and put down his book. “It's late, let's go to bed.”

“Princess, would you like to sleep on the outside or the inside?”

Huh? Could she choose? Isn't it said that married women can only sleep inside when sharing a bed with their husbands? This thought flashed through Xie Jinjia's mind for a moment, and then she became nervous again.

It was time for bed, and on the wedding night... Before her marriage, her mother had given her a booklet to read, telling her that she must study it carefully. Xie Jinjia had never been so serious as when she read a certain ‘Spring Palace’ booklet several times.

So, she naturally knew what was about to happen.

“I'll sleep inside,” Xie Jinjia said, then quickly climbed into bed, pulling the covers over her head and closing her eyes tightly, all in one fluid motion.

Her face, hidden under the covers, had already turned as red as a monkey's bottom.

She heard him extinguish the lamp, followed by the slight indentation of the bed beside her. He lay down beside her, and the scent of his clean, fresh fragrance filled her nostrils.

Xie Jinjia closed her eyes, nervously feeling that her heart was about to stop beating.

  What was she waiting for?

But after a long, long wait, the room remained peaceful. Xiao Qibai lay quietly beside her, making no move.

Xie Jinjia slowly opened her eyes and turned her head. She found that he had closed his eyes, his breathing even, as if he were about to fall asleep.

On their wedding night, he just slept like this?

Xie Jinjia pursed her lips. Why didn't he touch her? Was it because he truly loathed the fact that she had engineered this marriage? Was that why he didn't touch her on their wedding night?

A wave of disappointment washed over her.

She also felt a little angry. He didn't touch her on their wedding night—how was she supposed to explain this? What would everyone think of her?

And, she was so beautiful—even Ah Ling said she was pretty. He just left her like that?

Xie Jinjia puffed out her cheeks, thinking, since she had already forced this marriage, she might as well go all the way and take possession of his pure and innocent body as well.

In the dim candlelight, Xie Jinjia held her breath, stealthily inching closer to Xiao Qibai until only a finger's breadth separated her from his arm. She paused, took a deep breath, steeled her nerves, and then, with a soft ‘plop,’ kissed his face. Then, emboldened, she pressed her lips to his.

  Mmm… soft.

Xie Jinjia smacked his lips twice after kissing him. She lowered her head to kiss him again, but Xiao Qibai, having been slobbered on, couldn't help but reach out, wrap his arms around her soft waist, and turn her over, pinning her beneath him. It wasn't a kiss; it was more like she was licking him.

He chuckled softly, “You, you have no sense of propriety.”

Xie Jinjia lay beneath him, pouting her lips, “We haven't even done the main thing yet…”

In the dim candlelight, Xiao Qibai saw her beautiful crimson face, her large eyes shining like obsidian, filled with incomprehension. After their little tussle, her nightclothes were loose, revealing her delicate shoulders, and her black hair was scattered messily on the pillow…

Xiao Qibai tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear, leaned down, and kissed her pouting lips. “You're still too young.”

His gaze had just seemed to linger on her chest.

Young? Xie Jinjia suddenly sat up angrily, and was furious, “I'm not young!”

It must have been because she was lying down, and he hadn't seen clearly.

Seeing her eagerness to prove herself, even starting to unbutton her clothes, Xiao Qibai chuckled, catching her hands to stop her. He ruffled her fluffy hair, “Where did your mind wander? I meant you're too young in age.”

  Age…

Xie Jinjia realized she had misunderstood, making a fool of herself. Her face flushed crimson. “But… but I've already come of age.”

It's the age when one can marry; how could she be young?

Seeing the confusion on her face, Xiao Qibai didn't know how to explain it, so he simply said, “Wait a little longer. It's not good for your body if it's too early.”

  Xie Jinjia didn't quite understand.

Not wanting her to misunderstand, Xiao Qibai put his arms around her slender waist, pulling her close. He kissed her bright eyes softly, “You'll understand later.” Then he moved lower, kissing the tip of her upturned nose, and finally, her soft, tender lips.

Their lips met, his clean, refreshing scent mingling with hers. Xie Jinjia no longer had time to think. His kisses were incredibly gentle and restrained, yet still left Xie Jinjia breathless. Soon, his hot lips were on her ear, then her delicate white neck.

The heat from his kisses seemed to burn into her skin.

At some point, the bed curtains had been drawn, muffling the sounds of their lips meeting and entwining.

  The night deepened, growing darker.

After an unknown amount of time, the room fell silent, and even breathing became slow and steady from within the bed curtains.

Xie Jinjia had gotten up early today. She was tired after a day of hard work and soon she had no energy. Xiao Qibai put her down, and she fell asleep heartlessly and even snored.

It seemed that she was really tired.

Xiao Qibai turned his head and quietly looked at her slightly swollen lips. The little Princess was incredibly willful—it was she who had insisted on consummating the marriage and sneakily kissed him, and it was she who, exhausted from kissing, fell asleep instantly. She fell asleep so quickly after he laid her down; she was such a… little pig.

In truth, she really was still young. She only knew that on the wedding night, the marriage should be consummated, but she didn't really understand much about desire.

After she fell into a deep sleep, Xiao Qibai slowly withdrew his arm, gently tapped her upturned nose, and got up to lift the bed curtains.

The wedding candles burned quietly in the room, more than half consumed by the late hour.

  The moonlight outside was beautiful.

    ……

Xie Jinjia slept soundly, all the way until dawn.

She had been truly exhausted last night, practically closing her eyes the moment she hit the bed. She slept exceptionally well, vaguely hearing the maids whispering outside.

  “Should we wake the Princess?”

“The Young Master said not to.”

In her sleep, Xie Jinjia comfortably and lazily turned over, slowly opening her eyes and waking up. She even stretched languidly. The bed curtains were lifted, and someone sat down by the bed. Turning around, Xie Jinjia saw Xiao Qibai, already dressed.

His profile bathed in the morning light was elegant and refined, his thin lips curving into a slight smile. Seeing her dazed expression, he pinched her chubby cheek. “What are you spacing out for? Get up.”

Xie Jinjia was simply stunned. Waking up in the morning to see him—it felt like something that only happened in dreams.

And he was even so gentle in waking her.

Cupping her face, Xie Jinjia stared at him blankly. “I just… I can't quite believe it. We're really married.”

Seeing Xiao Qibai gazing at her warmly, Xie Jinjia said shyly, “Actually, I used to dream about us getting married. But in those dreams, you didn't seem to like me at all. You kept me at arm's length, and there was no way you would… marry me.”

She knew perfectly well that if it weren't for her mother's scheme, she and Xiao Qibai would never have been together in this life.

He would never have married her.

So, even though she had achieved her wish of marrying him, Xie Jinjia was still filled with anxiety. She was afraid that he would hate her even more because of it.

But last night, on their wedding night, Xie Jinjia could clearly feel his gentleness. It made her dare to hope, to imagine that perhaps he did like her a little, didn't he?

Unexpectedly, she was thinking about all this. Xiao Qibai stroked her soft, long hair.

“Rejecting you before wasn't because I didn't like you…” Xiao Qibai looked into her eyes, then swallowed the rest of what he was going to say. He simply said, “Silly girl, many times, not everyone can live their life following their heart's desires like you do.”

The only thing he had ever done in his life that followed his heart's desire was marrying this willful little Princess.

Xie Jinjia didn't understand. “Isn't it good to live according to one's heart's desires?”

“Good. Very good.” Xiao Qibai pinched her cheek. “Xie Jinjia, if you can live your whole life following your heart's desires, that would probably be the greatest fortune of my life.”

Xie Jinjia stared at him for a long moment, then like a happy swallow, she threw herself into Xiao Qibai's arms, pursing her lips to kiss him, slobbering all over his face.

After letting her act up for a while, Xiao Qibai held her close, scratching her little nose. His clear voice was full of amusement. “Alright, stop fooling around.”

That was a moment of happiness Xie Jinjia had never experienced before.

She felt that perhaps, maybe, Xiao Qibai loved her too.

In the years following their marriage, Xiao Qibai rarely expressed his feelings directly, but Xie Jinjia didn't mind at all. She was content. If their life continued like this, she would consider herself incredibly fortunate.

Unfortunately, sometimes life is unpredictable, and things don't always go as planned.

    ……

Even though Xiao Qibai tried to delay their attempts to conceive, a prolonged lack of pregnancy would inevitably lead to gossip.

When Xie Jinjia became pregnant with their first child, she unfortunately miscarried. Her body was incredibly weak afterward. Xiao Qibai was heartbroken and took leave to stay by her side. But at that very moment, the truth about Yu Fei's plot to murder Empress Zhaohui came to light, and the Crown Prince urgently summoned him to the Palace.

Xiao Qibai knelt on the ground, a file detailing Yu Fei's crime placed before him.

“How ironic,” the Crown Prince descended the steps, stopping beside him. “A loyal subject of mine, yet you married the daughter of the woman who murdered my mother.”

Xiao Qibai opened the file. Every word proved that Yu Fei was behind everything. The witnesses he had brought back from Huizhou had been silenced by Yu Fei's assassins.

  It was her.

Xiao Qibai slowly closed his eyes. He wasn't surprised by this revelation.

After giving birth to her daughter, Yu Fei's health had deteriorated, and she was unable to conceive again. To maintain the Emperor's favor, she had conspired with the Empress to poison Empress Zhao Hui. She had also plotted with Zhang Guifei. Each and every crime was punishable by death.

“Considering the unwavering loyalty and meritorious service of your family, I will show leniency. If you divorce your wife and remarry,” the Crown Prince said lightly, “I will not hold it against you.”

  Divorce…

Yu Fei's crimes were undeniable, a path leading only to death. Xie Jinjia had already lost her child and now her mother. If he divorced her now, given her personality, she wouldn't be able to bear it.

“Please, Your Highness, show mercy,” Xiao Qibai's forehead hit the floor hard.

Xie Jue turned around, sneering. “Even now, you still protect her? It seems the future of the Xiao family is less important than your beloved wife?”

Xiao Qibai closed his eyes tightly. “My wife bore me a child and nearly died after a miscarriage. To divorce her now would be to condemn her to death.”

“My wife knew nothing of Yu Fei's actions,” Xiao Qibai knelt, his voice firm. “When Your Highness was confined to the Cold Palace, the Princess heard that you were being bullied by the palace servants and stood up for you, scolding them. She was then framed by the Third Prince, who killed a palace servant to intimidate her.”

“She had nightmares for at least half a month afterward. I'm not trying to defend the Princess, but she has a kind heart. She was simply misled by the Third Prince and Yu Fei. She cares deeply for you, her brother, and her nature is not evil. Moreover—” Xiao Qibai curled his fingers, pausing before continuing slowly, “…moreover, even Yun Shanggong, protected the Princess before leaving the Palace.”

  “Impudent!”

A teacup crashed to the floor.

The mere mention of that name enraged the Crown Prince. “You dare defy me.”

Xiao Qibai closed his eyes tightly and kowtowed. To save Xie Jinjia's life, he had no other choice.

Only one person could persuade the Crown Prince to show mercy.

  The hall was deathly silent.

The Crown Prince's dark robes fell into his line of sight.

“I hear that the Xiao family believes in lifelong monogamy, and that you, Lord Xiao, are a man of deep affection.” The Crown Prince's harsh voice softened slightly. “If she were like you, if she truly had a heart—”

His voice trailed off; he didn't continue.

That ‘she’ referred to Yun Shanggong who had left the Palace. She was intelligent and discreet. Even though the Crown Prince had cast a wide net and searched for a whole year, he hadn't found her.

Using the Princess's matter as a cover, Yun Shanggong had escaped the Palace and vanished without a trace.

Xiao Qibai knew this situation intimately. Before Yun Ling escaped, the Crown Prince had intended to take her as a Cèfēi.

But what no one knew was that while the Crown Prince wanted her as a Cèfēi, she would have been his only consort.

The Crown Prince's feelings remained unspoken, unknown to her.

The powerful and aloof Crown Prince would never show weakness. But he was just a pitiful man, abandoned and separated from his love. Now, no one in the Palace dared mention Yun Ling's name.

But Xiao Qibai dared to mention her, because he knew that perhaps only she could soften the Crown Prince's heart.

Consorts who committed crimes were punished, but the Crown Prince didn't have the power to execute the Princess along with them. However, with Yu Fei's crimes exposed, the Xiao family, as supporters of the Crown Prince, had to distance themselves.

All he wanted was to save Xie Jinjia's life.

Xie Jue said calmly, “Things have come to this; a compromise is impossible. Xiao Qibai, choose: the honor of your family or your frail wife.”

Xie Jue knew what Xiao Qibai would choose.

No matter the circumstances, between Xie Jinjia and the Xiao family, Xiao Qibai would always choose the Xiao family.

The honor and shame of the Xiao clan rested on his shoulders. Xiao Qibai was never just Xiao Qibai.

After the Crown Prince left, Xiao Qibai knelt outside the hall for three days, offering to poison Yu Fei himself to show his resolve and sever ties.

Only this could truly demonstrate that the Xiao family had cut ties with Yu Fei.

But even with this poisoned wine, even if he didn't divorce her and saved the Princess's life, his future with Xie Jinjia would be over.

  The Crown Prince finally relented.

He demoted Xiao Qibai by two ranks.

Xiao Qibai slowly kowtowed. “Your servant, thanks Your Highness for your benevolence.”

He had thought he could protect her for a lifetime, but between the Xiao family and Xie Jinjia, he could only choose one.

In the end, it was fate.

    ——

When Xiao Qibai returned to the Xiao residence, he heard his grandfather coughing in his room. His grandfather's health had been failing for years.

His grandfather had always been upright and just, loyal to the Emperor and devoted to the country. His loyalty bordered on blind obedience. Even though Emperor Jingning had often suppressed and suspected him, he had never harbored any resentment.

Serving the Emperor, he would face death without regret.

In Grand Tutor Xiao's heart, his only loyalty was to the Emperor, regardless of the Emperor's virtue. He was stubborn, blindly loyal, and unwavering. Even though he had once been the tutor of the Sixth Prince, he never pleaded for the Sixth Prince when he was imprisoned in the Cold Palace.

Yet, this stubborn old man, at the very end, committed an act of ‘treason’: he used his lifelong reputation to clear the Sixth Prince's name.

It was his hope that the Sixth Prince, Xie Jue, would restore the Great Jin Dynasty, his compassion for the people of Great Jin, and his fear that Xiao Qibai's career would be ruined, that his ambitions would be thwarted.

The Xiao family, Xiao Qibai couldn't let go.

Therefore, he had to give up Xie Jinjia.

Returning to the courtyard, his wife still didn't know what had happened. Seeing him return after three days, she was worried and distraught.

Having just miscarried, she was weak and barely able to stand. Her usually rosy lips were pale, and her face was ashen.

Seeing him, she struggled to get up. Xiao Qibai quickly went to her and held her in his arms.

Tears streamed down Xie Jinjia's face. “Why did you only come back now? I thought something had happened to you.”

Xiao Qibai stroked her frail back, silent for a long time before saying, “Fool, what could happen to me?”

After Yu Fei's death, the grief over her mother's loss caused Xie Jinjia to cry for a whole month, draining her vitality and nearly taking half her life.

To others, Yu Fei was a wicked woman who committed heinous crimes. But to Xie Jinjia, Yu Fei was an exceptionally good mother, who protected and cherished her, treating her like a precious jewel for over a decade. Even before her death, she was still scheming for her daughter's benefit.

Xiao Qibai helped her through this dark time. If possible, he still wanted to protect this delicate and bright Princess for the rest of her life.

But the truth couldn't be hidden forever. The revenge for her mother's death would eventually come to light.

It was an ordinary day; she was about to give birth, but she discovered the truth in his study.

Three years later, the truth she should have known long ago flooded Xie Jinjia's eyes. Learning that her own husband had killed her mother, overwhelmed by grief and sorrow, Xie Jinjia went into premature labor.

After giving birth, Xie Jinjia couldn't remain married to her mother's murderer; divorce was the only path.

She was weakened by the premature birth and spent a month in bed before she could even walk.

Xiao Qibai came in carrying their daughter. Xie Jinjia wasn't unwilling to see her, but she had made up her mind to leave.

What was the point of seeing each other if she couldn't be with her?

She had always been careless and disorganized, never thorough. Even as a mother, she probably wouldn't be a good one. Xie Jinjia thought bitterly.

The nurse took the baby out, and the door closed, leaving only the two of them in the room.

Xiao Qibai didn't speak. He simply did what he always did, gently and tenderly wiping away her tears, causing them to fall even more freely.

It seemed that no one was at fault, yet they had reached a dead end.

She understood his painstaking efforts and his choices.

  She knew his predicament.

She knew his helplessness and his inability to reconcile everything.

  She couldn't blame anyone.

But Xiao Qibai, between her mother's life and blood, how could she remain with him peacefully?

“I'm sorry.” After countless words, Xie Jinjia could only say, “I'm sorry.”

Looking at the freshly written divorce papers, Xie Jinjia felt a burning sensation in her eyes. Closing her eyes, tears rolled down her cheeks.

In the end, it was fate.

Leaving the child to be raised in the Xiao residence, Xie Jinjia decided to go to Guanyun Temple, to live a life of quiet contemplation and Buddhist practice, in order to atone for her mother's sins.

Ah Ling was worried and wanted to accompany her to the mountain.

During this time, Ah Ling had been taking care of her.

She thought, Ah Ling had done too much for her in her life. She had finally found her family and experienced their warmth, only to be burdened by her problems. She was selfish and cruel. She only hoped that Ah Ling would stop caring for such a self-centered person as herself.

She wished Ah Ling a healthy, happy, and peaceful life after all the hardship she suffered in the first half of her life.

Looking back on her life, Xie Jinjia realized she had been incredibly reckless and self-absorbed, achieving nothing except pursuing Xiao Qibai.

Even him, she had forced into her life.

But ultimately, he didn't belong to her.

Getting into the carriage, Xie Jinjia paused but didn't look back. Tears fell into the air and were blown away by the wind. Recalling the past few years, she had said so much to Xiao Qibai: “Xiao Qibai, wait for me,” “Xiao Qibai, please don't hate me,” “Xiao Qibai, I really like you.”

Now, in the end, all she could leave him was:

“Xiao Qibai, may we never meet again in this life.”

He should have had a brilliant and illustrious career, reaching the pinnacle of power. It was she and her mother who had burdened him and the Xiao family for too long. From beginning to end, she had pursued him, clung to him, even resorting to tricks like falling into the water to force him. She had harmed him. If he hadn't married such a reckless and useless woman as herself, hadn't had to constantly protect her from her own troubles, and hadn't had to bear the consequences and blame that should have been hers, perhaps his life wouldn't have been so difficult? He wouldn't have had to be torn between her and the Xiao family.

Her best wish for him was that they would never meet again.

Back then, her vow had been made too lightly, a casual utterance of ‘unable to obtain love.’

But now she knew how painful it was to truly be unable to obtain love in this life.

    ——

Xie Jinjia went to Guanyun Temple, and Xiao Qibai didn't see her off.

Because seeing her off would mean a farewell.

In this life, he was Xiao Qibai of the Xiao family, Xiao Qibai of the Court, but he could never be Xiao Qibai to Xie Jinjia.

Back then, in the alley, under the rain falling on the blue stones, he told Xie Jinjia that he had no feelings for her and wouldn't wait for her.

But, he still waited for her for many years.

Days turned into nights, time flew by.

Youthful black hair turned into silver.

Only in the next life, he hoped he could protect her for a lifetime.

  2. 😭😭😭😭😭 why is the author so mean to the cute little princess and the excellent Xiao Qi Bai who was nothing but good throughout his life 😭 I guess perhaps to balance off the sweetness there must be some bitterness… but I cannot accept it.

    1. 😭 Me too! It's so unfair! I still can't accept it. From the last part, to be honest, I can't deny it: 'But, he still waited for her for many years. Days turned into nights, time flew by. Youthful black hair turned into silver. Only in the next life, he hoped he could protect her for a lifetime.' This definitely means they won't be together in this life. Black hair turning into silver... only in the next life... Ugh, this is why I hate bittersweet novels! I chose a happy ending (HE), but the author secretly added a bitter ending (BE) for the extra character. Good job, author. 🙃

    1. I wanted to blame him too, so bad. But, if we were in his place, we wouldn't say that. Our stepmother killed our mother and unborn sibling. Then she and her daughter lived blissfully while we were constantly targeted and nearly died several times since we were 7 years old. I don't know who could still be kindhearted after that.
