Time-Travel: The Tragic Cannon Fodder Female Supporting Character Makes a Comeback
CHAPTER 8: The 1970s Naive Supporting Girl (8)
Song Jianjun clenched his teeth again and again, holding it in so hard his jaw started to ache.
This whole mess left him with nowhere to vent his frustration. She was clearly a junior, yet she had climbed right over their heads and pressed down on the elders. It was suffocating.
He truly did not want to get involved in this kind of family nonsense anymore.
With a “to hell with it” attitude, he turned to his mother and said, “Mom, this girl isn’t someone you can mess with. You and Fangfang should go clean it up first. If you keep delaying, Jiabao will be spending tonight at the police station.”
Mother Song doted the most on her youngest son. Hearing this, she no longer had the energy to keep yelling at that wretched girl.
She immediately said to her second daughter-in-law, “My back and legs have been hurting these past two days. Fangfang, you come with me and help clean.”
Anyway, that dead girl would not be watching. She could just let the second daughter-in-law handle it.
One look at the old woman and Song Susu knew she was scheming again. She let out a soft scoff. “Can’t understand human language or what? I told you to clean it.”
“You…”
“Mom, hurry up and go. Don’t delay things,” Song Jianjun said with a frown.
Liu Fang was afraid her mother-in-law would drag her in again and quickly added, beating around the bush, “Mom, I really want to help you, but Jiabao is still waiting. We really can’t afford to waste time.”
In the end, Mother Song went off with a darkened face to borrow some burlap cloth, bent over, and started wiping up the water on the floor.
Originally, the water did not smell like anything. But the old woman mistook it as if it were urine. She acted like she could smell it, gagging after every wipe. In the end, she even slipped, her face landing squarely in the remaining puddle.
Song Yuanchao, who had not fallen asleep on the hospital bed, burst out laughing and mocked her loudly, “Grandma is drinking my pee.”
Mother Song collapsed, scrambling to her feet, wiping her mouth frantically with her sleeves, tears and snot streaming down her face in rage.
“Peh, peh, peh! How could the Song family end up with two heartless beasts like you? Aren’t you afraid of getting struck by lightning?”
“If lightning really strikes, you’ll be the first one it hits,” Song Susu said coldly. “Ever heard the saying that when the beam above is crooked, the ones below follow suit? Because of you two old things, the children below have all gone crooked beyond saving. Cold-blooded, merciless, harming your eldest son’s bloodline. You gave birth but never taught. The two of you should be the ones kneeling before the King of Hell to beg for forgiveness.”
As she spoke, Song Susu walked in, grabbed the old woman by the back of her collar, and directly used the clothes on her body to wipe up the remaining wet patch. Amid the old woman’s shrill screams, she dragged her straight out.
She slammed the door shut with a bang, making sure they could not disturb her brother.
Song Susu shoved the person back toward the others, brushed off her hands in disgust, and said, “Alright, enough nonsense. Say what you came for.”
Mother Song was being held up by her second son, clutching her chest in fury, so angry she could barely speak.
The back of her pants was soaked. Tears welled in her eyes, and she choked as she started crying.
“Jianjun, Mom has lived this long and never been humiliated like this before. I really don’t want to live anymore…”
Song Jianjun happened to have one hand supporting his mother from behind. When he felt the dampness and realized what it was, he immediately pulled his hand away in disgust.
“Mom, talk about the important stuff first. Otherwise, our whole family is finished.”
Both his job and Song Jiabao’s job were arranged by Li Yanlong. Jobs with free time, money, and minor management positions.
Their parents were old and unreliable. If they truly offended Li Yanlong, there was no guarantee they would even be able to find work in the future.
When his own interests were on the line, his mother’s wailing suddenly felt especially performative.
Liu Fang also thought her mother-in-law’s life and death act was ridiculous. She was always the one scolding others, but the moment someone talked back, she wanted to die.
She quickly added fuel to the fire. “Mom, losing our jobs is one thing. Jiabao hasn’t even gotten married yet. He can’t ruin his whole life just because he goes to jail.”
The moment she heard her youngest son might go to jail, Mother Song instantly sobered up and straightened her back.
Her hair was a mess, cheekbones jutting out sharply, and her eyes filled with open disgust. “Song Susu, what exactly do you want before you’ll get Li Yanlong to release your little uncle?”
Hearing that, Song Susu thought the old woman was not completely stupid after all. She had finally hit the key point.
Song Susu thought for a moment, then started counting on her fingers as she spoke. “When I brought my brother to your house, I carried 3000 yuan of the family’s savings. The state subsidy given to my brother and me was 30 yuan a month. Over 5 years, that adds up to 1800 yuan.”
“Then there were my parents’ friends who visited us from time to time, bringing gifts and red packets. Just Uncle Li alone gave more than 1000 yuan. Add in everyone else, and that comes to about 1200 yuan. Altogether, that’s 7000 yuan. Not a cent less. Hand it all over to me, and I can consider letting this go.”
Of course, she had not even counted her parents’ compensation yet. That money seemed to be accessible only to her and her brother, so there was no rush.
First, she would make them cough up this amount. As for the compensation, she had her own way to get it later.
When Mother Song heard such a huge sum, her scalp went numb and she blurted out, “In your dreams!”
Song Susu raised an eyebrow. “Is that so? Then I’ll call Uncle Li right now and tell him that Song Jiabao lost all humanity and nearly beat a model worker’s descendant to death. Best if it gets reported in the newspapers and criticized nationwide. Who knows, maybe he’ll even get the death penalty.”
“You wouldn’t dare!” Mother Song glared at her like a madwoman.
Song Susu rolled her eyes. “Watch me. When the time comes, I’ll bring a crowd to your house to throw rotten eggs. Your whole family will be famous.”
“You…”
Mother Song staggered back two steps, her chest feeling like it was being crushed by a huge stone, the pain coming in sharp spasms.
Song Jianjun stepped forward and grabbed his mother’s hand. “Mom, stop it. I’ll talk to her.”
Liu Fang frowned when she heard her husband speak. 7000 yuan was no small amount. Song Jianjun only earned 50 yuan a month, barely 600 yuan a year. To make 7000 yuan would take more than 10 years.
Song Jianjun knitted his brows tightly. It hurt to give up the money, but right now the family’s future mattered more. Money could be earned again. If their future was ruined, it would really be over.
He took the initiative and asked Song Susu, “You’re sure that once you get this money, this matter will be settled? Can you really make the decision for Uncle Li?”
“I can’t make the decision, but can you?” Song Susu replied coolly. “The initiative is in my hands now. Even if you don’t give me the money, do you really think I won’t be able to get it back?”
Her gaze turned sharp as she looked at him.
On the surface, he looked polished and respectable. In reality, he was just a sanctimonious hypocrite living off his elder brother’s family.
Song Jianjun was startled by that icy gaze. Gritting his teeth, he said, “You’d better keep your word. I’ll go home and discuss it with the family, try to scrape together the money. You get your Uncle Li to release your uncle first.”
“Don’t even dream about it. If the money isn’t in my hands, there’s nothing to talk about.”
With that, Song Susu stopped paying them any attention and turned to leave.
Mother Song thumped her chest twice with her fist, took a deep breath, and finally cursed, “Beast…”
“Enough, Mom. Stop provoking her,” Song Jianjun said, trying to calm her down. “We’ll go home and figure out how to gather the money first and get Jiabao out. As long as he’s out, money can be earned again. Since Li Yanlong is listening to the siblings, he probably won’t pursue this any further.”
After saying that, he gave his wife a look. “Take Mom home first. I’ll go see Jiabao.”
Seeing her husband’s dark expression, Liu Fang quickly nodded. “Alright, be careful. We’ll head back first.”
…..
Back in the hospital room.
Song Susu was peeling an apple for her brother.
On the bed, Song Yuanchao looked at his sister hesitantly. Earlier, he had dragged the IV stand over and secretly listened by the door.
If the Song family paid 7000 yuan, would his sister really have Uncle Li let their uncle go.
“Sis…”
“Don’t worry. I was lying to them.”
Song Susu handed him half of the peeled apple and took a bite of the other half herself.
Song Yuanchao relaxed immediately. He took small bites of the apple and asked softly, “So sister is going to get our money back first, and then deal with them after?”
