Time-Travel: The Tragic Cannon Fodder Female Supporting Character Makes a Comeback

CHAPTER 45: The 1970s Naive Supporting Girl (45)

Before the engagement banquet, Lu Tingxiao decorated the small villa according to Song Susu’s preferences.

The villa had three floors, with four or five rooms in total.

Lu Tingxiao also arranged rooms for Song Yuanchao, with one adjacent room serving as a bedroom and the other as a study.

Knowing that Song Yuanchao liked martial arts, he specially bought some imitation weapons that boys liked, as well as a boxing post and boxing gloves.

Of course, all of this was prepared in secret.

  ——

In the blink of an eye, National Day arrived, and the engagement banquet was held as planned.

Lu Tingxiao’s mother had prepared a custom-made red qipao for Song Susu.

With her fair skin, the dress looked even more radiant on her. Her hair was pinned up neatly with a jade hairpin, and when she stepped out in matching velvet heels, everyone present couldn’t help but stare in stunned silence.

People kept praising Lu Tingxiao for his good fortune, saying he had brought home a fairy-like beauty.

Dressed in a formal suit, Lu Tingxiao stayed by his fiancée’s side, blocking drinks for her and stepping in whenever anyone said something inappropriate.

It made quite a few elders laugh as they joked to his parents, “Tingxiao really dotes on his wife.”

“Of course,” his mother replied with a smile. “Susu is outstanding. Our whole family adores her. Please look out for her in the future. We treat this daughter-in-law just like our own daughter…”

Hearing the Lu family make their stance so clear, no one dared to look down on her anymore.

Seeing his sister getting married, Song Yuanchao felt a pang of reluctance. He quietly slipped outside, wiping his tears in secret.

Perhaps not paying attention, he accidentally bumped into an elderly man. The man was dressed in a military uniform, his chest covered in medals.

Song Yuanchao quickly spoke up, “I’m sorry, Grandpa. I didn’t mean to bump into you. Are you alright?”

The white-haired old man looked at the boy’s bright, well-blessed face and smiled, gently patting his head. “It’s nothing. Grandpa’s just fine.”

Song Yuanchao let out a breath of relief. His gaze drifted again to the medals on the man’s chest, and suddenly he pulled one out from his pocket.

It was something their father had left behind. He had brought it along because he wanted their father to “be there” for his sister’s engagement banquet.

“Grandpa, I have one too. Not as many as yours, though. You must be really amazing.”

At first, the old man only glanced at it casually, but his expression soon changed. He carefully took it and examined it closely.

“Child… what is Song Jianye to you?”

Song Yuanchao froze for a moment. “Song Jianye is my dad. Grandpa, do you know my dad?”

Old Master Zhong’s eyes turned red as he nodded, clearly moved. “Of course I do. Your father used to be my guard. He even injured his leg protecting me. I personally awarded him this medal.”

Then he paused and asked, “Where is your father now?”

Song Yuanchao’s mood fell instantly. He lowered his voice. “My dad passed away six years ago.”

Old Master Zhong was taken aback. Then he sighed, pulling the boy into a gentle hug and patting his back. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to upset you. Your father was a good man, a true hero. Even though he’s gone, we should still be proud of him.”

“I know. I’m proud to have a hero as my dad.”

Old Master Zhong held onto Song Yuanchao and chatted with him for quite a while. When he learned that both of the boy’s parents had passed away and that he and his sister had been relying on each other, he felt a pang in his heart.

What a coincidence, that very sister happened to be the Lu family’s new daughter-in-law.

Old Master Zhong immediately sent someone home to fetch a generous gift, then brought Song Yuanchao along to the banquet hall.

As a figure of veteran status, his presence made everyone in the hall rise to greet him. Even Lu Tingxiao’s father personally came out to welcome him. “Old Master Zhong, your presence truly honors us. Please, have a seat.”

Old Master Zhong sat at the head of the main table, and Lu Tingxiao, naturally recognizing this old leader, led Song Susu forward to offer toasts.

Old Master Zhong looked her over, then nodded with a satisfied smile. “Good girl. I can tell at a glance you’re Jianye’s child. Drinking isn’t good for a young lady’s health, so tea will do instead.”

Song Susu was startled. “Sir, you knew my father?”

“Of course. Your father saved my life. If Yuanchao hadn’t taken out that medal just now, I wouldn’t have recognized the two of you.”

Song Yuanchao stepped up beside his sister and quietly told her about how he had run into the old man earlier.

Only then did Song Susu understand. So the important figure Jiang Xiaoli had gotten close to through the medal was this very person.

Old Master Zhong had only one son, and in the younger generation, just three grandsons, all of whom were already grown up.

He looked at the siblings kindly and asked with a smile, “Grandpa Zhong really likes you two. How would you feel about becoming my god-granddaughter and god-grandson?”

The moment those words fell, the people nearby were stunned.

For Old Master Zhong to personally take in godchildren was an incredible honor.

Some had quietly thought that the Lu family’s new daughter-in-law came from a slightly lower background, but since the Lu family protected her so firmly, no one dared to say it openly.

Who would have expected such a turn of events? With Old Master Zhong as their backing, who wouldn’t give them some face in the future? In the Capital, they could practically walk sideways.

Seeing everyone’s reaction, Song Susu clearly understood what this meant. When an opportunity like this came, you didn’t let it slip away.

She calmly took her younger brother’s hand and nodded.

  “Grandpa Zhong, we’re willing.”

Song Yuanchao nodded obediently as well. “Thank you, Grandpa Zhong.”

“Good. From now on, you two are my grandchildren. I won’t let anyone bully you.”

Old Master Zhong laughed heartily and had someone bring over the generous gift he had prepared in advance.

He gave Song Yuanchao a high-quality jade pendant carved with a qilin.

He also presented a pair of matching dragon-and-phoenix jade pendants, gifting one to Song Susu and the other to Lu Tingxiao.

Old Master Zhong even gave a public reminder, “Boy from the Lu family, you must treat Susu well. You’re not allowed to bully her. If she’s ever wronged, this old man won’t let you off.”

Lu Tingxiao straightened his back and gave a formal salute. “Old Chief, please rest assured. I swear on my honor as a soldier that I will never fail my wife. Everyone here is welcome to keep me in check.”

After the engagement banquet ended, Song Susu and her brother received more gifts from the Zhong family, along with many generous presents from the other guests.

Because she still had school, Song Susu only stayed for two or three days before setting off back to S City with Uncle Li’s family.

After this trip, Li Yanlong and his wife finally felt completely at ease.

The siblings were truly blessed. With Old Master Zhong backing them, they wouldn’t have to suffer any grievances in the future.

Li Yanlong was especially thrilled. He never imagined he would one day be able to speak with Old Master Zhong, and he had even been gifted a set of tea ware.

Wang Yanli and Li Huihui each received gifts as well, and the whole family was delighted.

Lu Tingxiao, however, had some matters to handle and returned two days later.

They picked an auspicious day to move Song Susu and her younger brother into their new home.

Song Yuanchao hadn’t really wanted to move at first, but the moment he saw the punching bag and the display cabinet full of realistic weapon models his brother-in-law had prepared for him, he was stunned and overjoyed, grinning from ear to ear.

“Wow! Brother-in-law, you’re amazing. I love this so much.”

Song Susu took a look around upstairs and downstairs, only then realizing Lu Tingxiao had secretly prepared all of this. While her brother wasn’t paying attention, she cupped his face and gave him a quick kiss.

Lu Tingxiao instantly felt like all his effort had been worth it, reaching out to fondly ruffle her hair.

Of course, Song Susu and her brother would still occasionally stay at their old home. Mainly because Song Yuanchao missed his master. Whenever he had free time, he would run off to train, and eventually even started staying overnight there.

In the villa, Song Yuanchao’s bedroom and study were both on the third floor. There was even an open space upstairs just for boxing practice, and the entire third floor was basically his.

Song Susu and Lu Tingxiao stayed on the second floor. The two master bedrooms there were spacious. One was used as their bedroom, while the other became a huge walk-in closet. Near the balcony, there were two desks, making it convenient for any work or study.

There was also a bathroom on the second floor, which made things even more comfortable.

Now that they were officially married, they no longer had to hold back. Their days together turned soft and sweet, filled with quiet happiness.
