Time-Travel: The Tragic Cannon Fodder Female Supporting Character Makes a Comeback
CHAPTER 44: The 1970s Naive Supporting Girl (44)
Lu Tingxiao hadn't even made a move for a few days when school started.
Song Susu’s schedule was packed with both classes and the shop, so she could only spare an occasional day each week for him.
At first, Lu Tingxiao took her out to eat and to the movies. Later, when he realized she liked soft pastel colors, he started buying her clothes.
Song Susu wasn’t into the styles straight guys usually picked out.
So Lu Tingxiao switched to jewelry. Pink accessories weren’t super common, but he managed to find them. He also bought her hairbands, scrunchies, and even handkerchiefs.
He asked a friend to get a pink lipstick too, luckily a soft nude-pink instead of a shocking Barbie-pink that would scare anyone.
Song Susu enjoyed it and laughed along, but she still didn’t give in easily.
Lu Tingxiao then started experimenting with cooking. Whenever he heard about a good place to eat, he’d take Song Susu there first. If she liked it, he’d learn how to make it himself.
Sometimes Song Susu got too busy to eat out, and when she craved something, he would cook it and have it packed up to send to her at school.
Before long, everyone at school knew the popular girl already had a boyfriend.
The two of them spent over three months like this before Lu Tingxiao officially became her boyfriend.
With the policy relaxation at the beginning of the year, Song Susu’s three-story shop was fully rented out, giving her a small but comfortable windfall.
Although Lu Tingxiao was still in the military, because of the risky situation at the start of the year, his unit didn’t send him on any external assignments. He spent most of the year in S City, training new recruits, which gave him plenty of free time to be with Song Susu.
With her shop fully rented, she only collected the rent and didn’t have to worry about a thing. Life felt easy and comfortable.
Ever since it became public that they were dating, Grandma Lu and Lu Tingxiao’s mother often came to stay for short visits. Song Susu got along well with both of them.
By the time summer arrived, on the first day of the vacation, Song Susu took Lu Tingxiao to officially meet her elders.
They went to Uncle Li’s house.
Li Yanlong and Wang Yanli had a good impression of him, while Li Huihui gave Song Susu a mischievous look, raising her eyebrows and winking.
In the end, she even pulled Song Susu aside to her room and whispered, “Is your boyfriend the same guy from the hospital the other day?”
Song Susu was both amused and exasperated. “How do you even remember that? Even a dog’s nose isn’t as sharp as yours.”
Li Huihui puffed up proudly, hands on her hips. “Girls just have that sixth sense. I said back then something was off, and I was right.”
“Alright, alright, you’re the best, the smartest. I’ll reward you with a lipstick.”
“I already got lipsticks from you. I don’t want that. You owe me a big meal.”
“Fine, fine, fine…”
After lunch, everyone chatted until evening.
Uncle Li personally cooked some snacks to go with drinks, and Lu Tingxiao joined in, sharing another round of drinks.
By the end, he looked a little tipsy, forehead leaning on his hand. Uncle Li worried about him driving and offered him to stay over.
Lu Tingxiao refused, but when Song Susu saw him giving her a sly look, she knew he was just pretending to be drunk.
After saying goodbye to Uncle Li’s family, they set off.
But as soon as they turned a corner outside the Li family's house, Lu Tingxiao grabbed Song Susu's waist and kissed her.
He kissed fiercely, almost recklessly, biting slightly, enough to make her lips ache.
In the months they’d been together, they hadn’t kissed much. At most, they held hands or shared a quick, light peck.
Today, he felt recognized and emboldened.
After the kiss, Lu Tingxiao, still catching his breath, leaned close to her ear. “Susu, thank you for introducing me to your family. I’m really happy.”
His low voice and warm breath made the night feel suddenly intimate.
Song Susu’s ears twitched, and she instinctively pulled back, but her hands slid up his back, circling his neck, and she pulled him down.
Then she stood on her tiptoes and kissed him, showing him exactly how it should be done.
She could feel the strong hands around her waist tightening, a little dangerously, so she quickly pulled back, not daring to tease him further.
Lu Tingxiao was still savoring the moment, realizing there was a whole other way to kiss.
He grabbed her wrist, drawing her into his embrace. “The first kiss wasn’t quite right. Let’s try again. There’s no one here.”
Before she could respond, his lips found hers.
Compared to the first kiss, this one was gentle.
He followed her lead step by step, mirroring her movements, and seemed to discover little tricks along the way, adding a few new moves to their kiss.
Song Susu was caught off guard, but she couldn’t deny that she was enjoying it.
The tall man’s frame almost completely enveloped her. She wore a floral maxi dress, and the exposed part of her leg was straight and fair, pressed almost against him for support.
After a while, Song Susu, her breathing a bit fast and cheeks flushed, tilted her head to break away from his possessive kiss.
“That’s enough. Someone will be coming soon.”
Lu Tingxiao held her close, pressing his forehead to hers, his voice low and husky. “Do you like it when I kiss you like this?”
Song Susu let out a soft laugh and tapped his chin with a peck. “I do. Your technique isn’t bad, and I have to admit, I kind of enjoyed it.”
After saying that, she quickly stepped back a few paces.
While fixing her waist-length hair, she urged him, “Hurry up, if Uncle Li and the others come out and see us, you won’t be allowed to kiss me anymore.”
Lu Tingxiao couldn’t argue with her, so he just smiled and followed along.
……
Once their relationship was confirmed, kissing and hugging became a regular thing.
During the summer break, the two were often inseparable. Song Susu even went with him to the military base just to grab meals, and in the end, people teasingly started calling her “sister-in-law.”
As summer drew to a close, the couple’s closeness only grew. A few times things almost got out of hand, but Lu Tingxiao managed to restrain himself each time.
Song Susu felt their relationship had reached a mature stage and started thinking about whether they should get their marriage certificate first.
Lu Tingxiao had the same idea. After checking with Song Susu and getting her agreement, he went to visit Li Yanlong and his wife.
Li Yanlong and his wife respected Song Susu’s opinion, but since she was still in school, they suggested they could get engaged and register the marriage first, leaving the actual wedding for next year or the year after.
With that approval, Lu Tingxiao informed his parents so both families could meet and sit down to discuss the engagement.
At their first meeting, Li Yanlong immediately noticed that his family wasn’t ordinary.
Being more experienced than the younger generation, he considered things carefully and preemptively explained Song Susu’s family background.
Although she was an orphan with no parents, Song Susu had Li Yanlong and his wife backing her up. Their family wasn’t rich or noble, but they wouldn’t let anyone bully their daughter.
The Lu family had long known Song Susu’s background and never once looked down on her. On the contrary, their words carried a tenderness and care for her.
Going back three generations, everyone in their family started from humble beginnings. Their son’s life had been saved by Song Susu, and the Lu family had a conscience—they would never do anything to mistreat anyone.
As the saying goes, marriages arranged by parents and matchmakers, conducted openly and properly, are the foundation of a good union.
The Lu family, being particular, had a marriage certificate written and prepared betrothal gifts and jewelry for the bride’s family. Even more valuable than the 60,000 yuan bride price were the dozen or so jewelry boxes, each filled with priceless treasures.
On top of that, there were two property deeds: one was a traditional three-compound courtyard in the capital, the other a small villa in S City, making it convenient for the couple to live together.
Seeing how much they valued Song Susu, Li Yanlong felt a little more at ease.
Although he wasn’t as wealthy as them, he generously contributed 3,000 yuan and three shops as part of the dowry. The couple currently owned seven or eight shops in total.
The money and the three shops were agreed upon together, set aside as part of the dowry for Song Susu.
Li Huihui wasn’t jealous at all. She even used her own saved New Year money to buy two hefty gold bracelets as a little extra gift for Song Susu.
The families also followed tradition, preparing the dowry quilts and closets in advance.
Seeing all of it, Song Susu’s eyes reddened with gratitude. She felt deeply touched—Uncle Li’s family truly treated her like a daughter and sister, showing them great love and care.
Finally, the two sides exchanged tokens, and the ceremony was complete.
Both of them got their household registration book, and that very afternoon they went to register their marriage.
The engagement banquet was set to be held on National Day.
As for the wedding, the Lu family respected Li Yanlong’s opinion and planned to wait until the child was a bit older, either next year or the year after.
Since the Lu family only had this one son, the engagement banquet would naturally be a grand celebration.
On Song Susu’s side, her only close family was her younger brother and Uncle Li’s family, so they didn’t plan a big event. When the time came, the family would just travel together to the Capital.
