Time-Travel: The Tragic Cannon Fodder Female Supporting Character Makes a Comeback
CHAPTER 68: The First Wife of a 1980s Big Shot Who Died Young (1)
The moment Ye Susu entered the storyline, she found herself lying on a bed, a mosquito net hanging from the beams above.
“Meilan, you’re still sleeping?”
A woman’s voice called from outside.
Footsteps drew closer, and the door was pushed open.
A woman walked in. She had short, ear-length hair, delicate features, and was dressed in a blue top with black pants. She looked to be in her early forties. There was a smile on her face, but it didn’t quite reach her eyes, giving her the air of someone who smiled on the surface while hiding something underneath.
Ye Susu hadn’t fully received the memories yet, so she simply nodded at her.
Seeing her daughter looking a bit dazed, Liu Cuijuan stepped forward with a show of concern and gently patted her head.
“Look at you, child. Why bother arguing with Meifang? You’re my biological daughter, after all. I’ve already scolded her for you.”
While responding casually, Ye Susu hurried to sort through the incoming memories.
This world was set in the 1980s. Her current identity was Huo Meilan, twenty years old, married for three months.
And the woman standing in front of her was her biological mother, Liu Cuijuan.
Her father had died in the line of duty when Huo Meilan was just three years old. Liu Cuijuan left the child with her grandparents and turned around to remarry, becoming a stepmother in another household.
Huo Meilan was raised by her grandparents. In the early 1970s, the elderly couple had once saved an old high-ranking officer by chance and earned his favor in return.
As the years passed, they grew older and weaker. Their granddaughter had blossomed into a stunning young woman and had already drawn the attention of many. Worried they wouldn’t be around much longer, the old couple wrote a letter ahead of time, entrusting their granddaughter to that old officer.
At the beginning of the year, the two of them passed away one after the other. The old commander came to pay his respects. After seeing Huo Meilan in person and finding her both beautiful and well-mannered, he arranged for her to marry his youngest son.
Huo Meilan had only ever seen his photograph, yet she somehow ended up registering the marriage just like that.
Originally, she was supposed to go to the army to join her husband and live with him. But just then, her biological mother suddenly came back, crying and saying she couldn’t bear to part with her, insisting that she come stay for a while.
Huo Meilan had grown up without her parents. Now that her mother treated her with such warmth and care, she couldn’t bring herself to refuse, so she agreed to stay for some time.
After her second marriage, Liu Cuijuan had given birth to a pair of twins. She had also raised her husband’s three-year-old daughter as her own. In her eyes, those three children were naturally closer to her.
At first, she had planned to use her biological daughter to demand a generous bride price. But when she found out the groom’s family was from the capital and that the marriage was arranged out of gratitude, other thoughts began to stir in her mind.
Later, her stepdaughter Wu Meifang overheard about this excellent match and started making a fuss, insisting that she wanted to marry into a wealthy family too.
Her husband, Wu Dajun, had already picked up quite a bit of useful information from Huo Meilan, such as the fact that she and her husband had never even met in person.
Tempted, he privately discussed it with his wife and suggested swapping the marriage.
After all, the other party had never seen her in person. Meifang and Meilan even shared a slight resemblance in their features. Once everything was done and settled, wouldn’t it still be their daughter enjoying the good life?
In the end, Liu Cuijuan was persuaded. She really did go through with swapping the marriage.
After Wu Meifang followed the army, she barely had time to enjoy her dream life before the truth was exposed. The old commander was furious when he found out.
At the same time, the pitiful Huo Meilan was tricked by her own parents onto a train, supposedly to join her husband in the army. In reality, they had married her off to a stranger from another place in exchange for a high bride price.
By the time Huo Meilan realized what was happening, it was already too late. Her voice had been poisoned mute, and she was taken far away to an unfamiliar place.
When the old commander finally managed to find her after countless efforts, she had already been tortured to the point of losing her sanity. She was dazed and broken, her body riddled with illnesses. Not long after, she passed away.
The old commander was filled with guilt. He made Liu Cuijuan’s entire family pay the price, but even then, it did nothing to ease his remorse.
Mission objective: Help Huo Meilan gain a new life and follow her rightful path. This time, her life must be smooth and fulfilling.
“Meilan? I’m talking to you. Why aren’t you saying anything?”
Ye Susu, now in the role of the rescued supporting character Huo Meilan, looked at the woman in front of her and suddenly raised her hand.
Slap!
The sound was sharp and loud. Liu Cuijuan froze in shock, touching her face as she stared at her in disbelief. “Meilan! What are you doing!”
The more Huo Meilan looked at her face, the more unbearable it became. She couldn’t hold back and slapped her again.
Slap!
This one was even louder than before.
“Ah! Have you lost your mind!”
After steadying herself, Liu Cuijuan staggered back a couple of steps, glaring in anger. “Huo Meilan! I’m your mother. Have you lost your mind!”
Huo Meilan stretched lazily and got out of bed. “Liu Cuijuan, you tricked three hundred yuan out of me, and you took the Qin family’s token. You’d better hand them back nicely, or I have other ways to make this a lot more painful for you.”
Liu Cuijuan’s expression changed. She forced a softer tone through gritted teeth. “Meilan, what are you saying? I’m your real mother. Why talk about money like that? As for the Qin family’s token, what if you lose it? Mom is just keeping it safe for you.”
The token had already been taken by her other daughter. The train left this morning. If she could just stall for a few more days, once Wu Meifang got there and everything was already done, it would be settled.
Seeing she wouldn’t budge, Huo Meilan directly exchanged points with the system for a strength boost, gaining overwhelming power.
“Exchange successful. 20,000 points consumed. Remaining points: 1,008,850.”
Her body instantly felt different, strength surging through her limbs. Without another word, she grabbed Liu Cuijuan by the neck and lifted her straight up.
“Ah!”
Dangling in the air, Liu Cuijuan nearly fainted from fright. She stammered, “Meilan, let’s talk this out!”
“The money.”
“It’s in… in my room, by the bedside. Don’t get upset. I… I’ll go get it for you right now.”
Huo Meilan carried her out with ease and headed straight to the bedside cabinet in her room.
Holding her by the neck with one hand, Huo Meilan yanked open the drawer with the other and started rummaging through it.
But there was only a little over a hundred yuan inside.
She dragged Liu Cuijuan closer and demanded, “Where’s the rest of the money?”
Liu Cuijuan’s face turned pale. “I… I clearly left it here.”
Then something seemed to occur to her, and she stammered, “Maybe your Uncle Dajun took it to use. I’ll make it up to you later, I promise.”
One look at the panic on her face was enough for Huo Meilan to know she was lying.
She dropped onto the edge of the bed, still gripping Liu Cuijuan’s collar without letting go.
“Tell me. Where’s the token the Qin family gave?”
Liu Cuijuan didn’t dare tell the truth, her mind scrambling for an excuse. Suddenly, her scalp burned with pain as her hair was yanked hard, and she cried out instinctively.
“Ah! Don’t, don’t pull, I’ll talk!”
Huo Meilan didn’t loosen her grip. “Wu Meifang took it to the army, didn’t she?”
Liu Cuijuan panicked. She hadn’t expected her to guess it so quickly, and hurried to explain, “Meilan, following the army is hard. Meifang’s tougher, so I just let her go ahead and check things out first. Once she writes back, I’ll buy you a train ticket and personally send you off.”
Smack!
Huo Meilan didn’t hesitate to slap her again. “Personally send me off? More like sell me off, right? Someone like you deserves to rot in hell!”
When others get bullied, at least it’s by outsiders. But this one? Her own mother taking the lead, not protecting her own daughter and instead helping the abusers. Worse than an animal.
The more Huo Meilan thought about it, the angrier she got. She kicked her a few more times, each one solid and merciless, until Liu Cuijuan passed out cold.
At that moment, Wu Dajun just happened to come back with his twin sons.
As soon as he arrived, he ran into Huo Meilan walking out of the house, immediately putting on a fatherly expression and pretending to be concerned.
“Meilan, are you hungry? Uncle will cook something for you.”
