Time-Travel: The Tragic Cannon Fodder Female Supporting Character Makes a Comeback
CHAPTER 66: The 1960s Marriage Swap: Marrying a Cook (20)
When Ye Su heard about it, she just smiled.
So Ye Liu had come back to dig up treasure. Looks like her rebirth wasn’t completely useless after all, at least she knew about this.
Too bad Ye Su had already dug everything up long ago.
And honestly, that girl really had no brains. Who goes around so openly, bringing an outsider back to hunt for treasure? It was practically announcing to everyone that they had a hidden agenda.
——
June 7th.
Ye Su officially got married. Ye Qingsong carried his younger sister out on his back. Ye Bai couldn’t make it back in time, but he had sent a wedding gift by mail.
Duan Ziyu wore a dark Zhongshan suit, a red flower pinned to his chest. In his hands, he held a big bundle of wildflowers and greenery he had picked himself, tied together with a red ribbon. Simple, but surprisingly beautiful.
Amid the lively cheers and teasing from the crowd, he welcomed his bride.
Ye Su had her hair styled up in a high bun, decorated with a circle of red gauze flowers. She wore a white blouse on top, paired with black wide-leg trousers, and low chunky-heeled leather shoes.
A handsome man and a beautiful woman, they looked perfectly matched standing together.
The Ye family handed out a bag of hard candies to the villagers. Food was precious these days, and treating the whole village to a feast just wasn’t realistic, so they shared sweets instead to spread the joy.
Over at the Duan family, they were just as generous, handing out candies and sunflower seeds to the villagers.
With her son getting married, Mother Duan was overjoyed. After accepting the tea her daughter-in-law offered, she passed all the jewelry over to her.
……
That night, Duan Ziyu was gentle to the extreme, and everything unfolded naturally.
He wasn’t focused on his own pleasure, taking his time instead, patiently cherishing and pleasing the one he loved…
……
After getting married, Ye Su quickly found that lazing around the village all day got a little boring.
Duan Ziyu went to work, and now that his mother’s health had improved, she was full of energy every day, taking care of everything inside and outside the house. There was basically nothing left for Ye Su to do.
Dressed in her sleepwear, Ye Su lay on the bed in their new room, basking in the sunlight.
The room was bright and spacious. The double bed had been specially made before the wedding, and all the bedding was brand new, soft and comfortable to the touch.
Beside the bed against the wall stood a wardrobe. Next to it was a dressing table. Across from them sat a large round table, topped with candies, peanuts, sunflower seeds, a plate of mung bean cakes, and another of candied dried fruits.
By the window, a smaller table held a thermos and ceramic cups.
Near the door, there was a clothes rack and a shoe cabinet, and on the other side, a washstand.
The room had everything it needed, neat and bright without feeling crowded.
Duan Ziyu used to come home at noon now and then, but ever since they got married, he returned every single day, rushing back on his bicycle as soon as he got off work.
He would come home to wash clothes, cook for his wife, keep her company, holding her close, stealing kisses, and lingering by her side.
Ye Su was more than satisfied with this kind of life. It was easy, comfortable, and peaceful.
In August, Duan Ziyu was assigned another business trip to a neighboring province.
Coincidentally, it was the same place where Ye Su’s unpleasant uncle and aunt lived.
Ye Su packed her things and went with him, planning to settle a score while she was at it.
The two of them set off together.
After they arrived, Duan Ziyu went off to handle work. Ye Su made an excuse about going out for a walk nearby, but in reality, she headed straight for the countryside.
She first went into her space and did her makeup, turning her face into something more mature and plain. She even added a few large moles for good measure.
Then she went directly to the village. Once there, she introduced herself as a distant niece from her uncle and aunt’s extended family. There really was such a person in her memories, so the identity held up.
Ye Su went straight to the place where she had once been confined. As soon as she arrived, she heard shouting and insults from inside.
“That old thing died and didn’t leave a single thing behind. And you, why don’t you go to the city and squeeze something out of your sister…”
“Enough already, stop yelling. You’re the one who can’t even have children, and you’re blaming me?”
The two of them were arguing inside.
Ye Su pushed the door open, then quietly locked it behind her. Moving lightly, she pulled out a solid iron bat from her space.
With one kick, she slammed the door wide and charged in, swinging without hesitation.
“Ah!”
Caught completely off guard, the two of them took a hit and immediately crumpled, the pain leaving them unable to move.
Ye Su moved quickly, grabbing some worn towels and strips of cloth and stuffing them into their mouths one by one.
Then she yanked down a sheet from behind and threw it over both of them, before aiming straight for their legs and striking hard.
She didn’t hold back at all, hitting with ruthless force.
Half an hour later, Ye Su left the place.
By the time she got back to the county town, it was already noon. She went into her space to wash up and returned to her original appearance.
Back at the guesthouse, Duan Ziyu hadn’t returned yet.
After all that running around, she felt hot, so she took out a popsicle from her space fridge and started eating it.
She used to have ice cream too, but she had already finished it all.
Not long after, Duan Ziyu came back carrying a large food container.
“Did you wait long? I saved your favorite dishes. They were handing out fruit over there too, so I cut some up for you.”
He hadn’t even changed out of his chef uniform yet. As he spoke, he gently set out the food.
“Don’t rush. We’ll eat later. Sit down and rest first.” Ye Su took out a handkerchief and wiped the sweat from his forehead.
Duan Ziyu smiled, finished laying out the dishes, and went to change and wash up. Before leaving, he added.
“If you’re hungry, go ahead and eat first. Don’t wait for me. I’ll just wash up quickly.”
After saying that, he picked up a basin and went out to fetch water.
Ye Su wasn’t hungry yet, so she set out the chopsticks and waited for him to come back so they could eat together.
As for the two who had been beaten in the countryside, they finally managed to crawl out and seek help after regaining consciousness. But when they opened their mouths, their throats were so hoarse that no sound would come out for a long while.
The couple didn’t have a good reputation in the village. The villagers who passed by didn’t bother with them, and in the end, it was the village chief who helped send them to the hospital.
Both of their legs had been broken. On top of the shock, they also showed signs of partial paralysis, their mouths twisted and speech slurred.
The village chief had no choice but to report it to the police. But since the two hadn’t seen their attacker clearly, and their voices were ruined, they couldn’t provide any useful clues.
The police went around asking the villagers, but no one knew anything. Everyone just said the couple had done plenty of bad things and had a long list of enemies. Who knew who might have attacked them.
With no leads, the case couldn’t move forward and was eventually shelved.
With her revenge settled, Ye Su’s only task left was to live her role as the “contrast” well.
She spent her days leisurely, never worrying about food or clothes. She was so bored that Duan Ziyu even asked around and got her a temporary job at the supply and marketing cooperative, just helping out here and there. Easy work, just something to pass the time.
Later, going back and forth between the village and town became too tiring, so she bought a small courtyard house in town. Housing there was cheap, and it made life more convenient.
Sometimes the family stayed there, sometimes they went back to the village.
By the New Year, Ye Bai finally returned. It just so happened that her older brother and sister-in-law had also welcomed a child, so the whole family had a warm reunion together.
As the years of famine gradually faded, it didn’t take long before a more sensitive era arrived.
The village began receiving educated youth sent down from the cities.
In town, Red Guards started appearing everywhere, raiding homes and criticizing people. People kept their heads down just to get by.
Duan Ziyu’s mentor from the capital was also sent down, assigned to a cowshed in a nearby village.
When Duan Ziyu heard the news, he felt a mix of emotions, but also a bit of relief.
At least he could look after him. He wouldn’t be left completely alone.
Control was much stricter in the cities, counties, and towns, while the countryside was relatively more flexible.
For Ye Su and Duan Ziyu, it didn’t affect their lives too much. They carried on as usual, occasionally finding quiet ways to help his mentor.
On the surface, the young couple dressed plainly and followed the crowd. But once they were home with the doors closed, they still ate whatever they liked.
Meanwhile, on Ye Liu’s side, things completely fell apart.
Over these six or seven years, she had gone from a healthy, pretty young girl to a worn-down woman, her body plagued with all kinds of ailments.
