Time-Travel: The Tragic Cannon Fodder Female Supporting Character Makes a Comeback

CHAPTER 98: The Eldest Sister of the 90s Quits Sacrificing Herself (10)

Zhao Fuyao no longer wanted anything to do with these people.

With how foolish they were, even if they got the money, they would just end up being drained dry by others anyway. She might as well cut it off cleanly right here.

That same day, she returned to the Zhao home and contacted a professional lawyer.

The next day, she invited the neighborhood office, several neighbors, and even her parents’ workplace leaders to serve as witnesses.

The total compensation was 180,000 yuan, plus 3,000 yuan left in her parents’ bankbook and 300 yuan in cash.

Altogether, the Zhao family’s total assets came to 183,300 yuan.

Over the past half year, expenses for tuition, daily living costs, pocket money, and the money they had randomly spent from the bankbook added up to a little over 2,000 yuan.

  That left 181,000 yuan remaining.

Split evenly among five children, each person would receive 36,200 yuan.

The four Zhao siblings had already contacted the neighborhood office the day before to transfer their household registration. They flat-out refused to acknowledge Zhao Fuyao as their guardian.

No matter how the neighborhood staff and neighbors tried to persuade them, the four children were dead set on splitting from their eldest sister. Everyone around them scolded them for being ungrateful, saying they did not even know who truly cared for them and would suffer sooner or later.

Before dividing the money, Zhao Fuyao had her lawyer draft a formal severance statement. From that point on, she would have no legal or personal ties with those four siblings, nor with the Zhang family. Each of them had to sign and press their fingerprints one by one.

All four were already dazzled by the thought of so much money and signed without hesitation.

No one said a bad word about Zhao Fuyao. Instead, they all felt she, the overburdened eldest sister, had been truly hurt and pitied her, while cursing the four ungrateful children.

After the household registration transfer, the Zhao family’s work unit originally planned to reclaim the housing. But seeing that Zhao Fuyao was alone and not having an easy time, they allowed her to continue living there until she got married.

Zhao Fuyao politely declined and explained that she had been accepted into university and would soon be studying in another city, so her household registration would be moved along with her.

The four Zhao siblings, still happily clutching their money, followed the Zhang family back to their hometown to handle the household registration. They planned to stay there for a while before figuring out a way to transfer it back later.

Unfortunately, they had no idea that on the very day they left, the house had already been reclaimed by the work unit.

Zhao Fuyao did not take anything with her and simply returned to Haishi.

Back in Haishi, Yang Jiale and Liu Kai immediately came over to check on her and ask what had happened.

After Zhao Fuyao left, the neighborhood had been full of gossip. Everyone was talking at once, saying all sorts of things.

“Those gossipy women do not understand anything. They just talk nonsense and follow rumors wherever they go.”

Yang Jiale looped her arm through her friend’s and complained unhappily.

They had always thought Fuyao was impressive, but they never expected her background to be so harsh. Her parents were gone, she had no real family left, and she was still studying while taking care of younger siblings, only to end up being slandered by relatives in the end.

Liu Kai looked at Zhao Fuyao with concern, a hint of sympathy in his eyes.

“Yeah, don’t listen to outside rumors. They’ll die down after a while.”

  Zhao Fuyao smiled at them.

“Thanks for worrying about me, but I’m really fine. Life is never without setbacks. You just deal with them as they come. Everything on my side is settled now, no more loose ends.”

Yang Jiale was the first to clap with a bright smile.

  “That’s great!”

The reason she liked hanging out with her so much was exactly this attitude. It always felt like nothing could bring her down.

Seeing how sincere and calm Zhao Fuyao looked, with no sign of gloom at all, Liu Kai also relaxed and smiled a little.

The three of them chatted for a while, then made plans to watch a movie the next day before Yang Jiale and Liu Kai each headed home.

They had suggested the movie mainly to help cheer her up, and Zhao Fuyao knew it was their kindness, so she did not refuse.

She decided to push back her trip to Shanghai by a day, wanting to spend a little more time with her two friends before her admission letter arrived. Friendships from high school were rare, after all.

Otherwise, once they went off to university, they would end up scattered across different cities and barely see each other.

Just like that, the trio officially kicked off their holiday plans in high spirits.

Yang Jiale had been dreaming about going to a ¹dance hall for ages. Back in high school she did not dare, but now that she had graduated, she was absolutely determined to go.

Taking advantage of her parents being away on a business trip, she dragged Zhao Fuyao to her house so they could get ready together for the night out.

Zhao Fuyao had never experienced a dance hall in this era before, so she was genuinely curious.

Yang Jiale’s wardrobe was full of bright, flashy clothes she had secretly collected. In her eyes, they were trendy and fashionable, but Zhao Fuyao thought they were a bit over the top.

Still, she could not resist Yang Jiale’s persistent coaxing.

“Everyone dresses like this at dance halls. Just come with me. If not, I’ll be too embarrassed to go alone.”

In the end, Zhao Fuyao gave in and agreed to keep her company.

Yang Jiale wore a green off-shoulder top with a pale yellow pleated mini skirt. With her tall frame and slender legs, she actually pulled it off quite well.

Seeing her friend smear on a shocking bright red lipstick, Zhao Fuyao took the initiative to fix her makeup and even tied her hair into a loose, lazy bun.

Yang Jiale looked at her completely transformed reflection and immediately grabbed Zhao Fuyao, kissing her on the cheek twice.

“Wow, I can actually look this pretty? I look like a celebrity. You’re seriously my treasure.”

Zhao Fuyao did not know whether to laugh or cry. She sifted through Yang Jiale’s pile of clothes and picked out a pair of black pencil pants, then chose a short-sleeved top from the colorful mess.

“Isn’t that just your usual outfit? You’ll be the odd one out if you go like this. Let me pick you something, we’ll go in matching styles.”

Yang Jiale snatched the clothes from her hands and instead pulled out a white puff mini skirt she had been keeping, along with a black fitted short-sleeve top.

At first glance, it looked like a normal T-shirt, but the back had strap details that could be tied into a bow. For this era, it was honestly pretty fashionable.

“If my skin weren’t so dark and black and white didn’t suit me, I’d wear this myself. You’re so fair, it’ll look amazing on you…”

Under Yang Jiale’s strong encouragement, Zhao Fuyao tried it on.

It actually looked pretty good. The skirt was not too short, just a bit above the knees. The fitted top made her look even slimmer, highlighting a tiny waist and long legs.

“Wow, Fuyao, your figure is insane. So fair and smooth. I dream of having skin like yours.”

Yang Jiale clung to her arm enviously, poking at her a bit, then looking at her own small chest and her own flat frame before letting out a silent, miserable cry.

“Fuyao, what do you usually eat?”

Zhao Fuyao glanced at her and immediately knew what the girl was thinking. She answered casually, “Eat more tofu and soy products. Just get enough protein.”

In truth, her figure was not even that exaggerated. The original body had been quite thin, and after adjusting her health over the past half year and improving her diet, she had slowly put on a little healthy weight.

“Got it. Starting today, I’m eating tofu every day.”

The two of them spent the afternoon getting ready at home. By the time the sky started to dim, they grabbed a quick bite and headed out to meet Liu Kai.

The moment they saw him, both girls fell silent for a second. Then they exchanged a glance and could not help but try and hold back their laughter.

Liu Kai looked like he had secretly borrowed his dad’s clothes. A white dress shirt, floor-length jeans, and way too much gel in his hair so it stuck up like a hedgehog.

Seeing their expressions like they were about to laugh but trying not to, he awkwardly touched his hair and asked in a low voice, “Is it really that weird? I used too much gel and I can’t wash it out.”

At that last sentence, Yang Jiale completely lost it and burst out laughing.

Zhao Fuyao did not laugh so openly, but the corners of her lips lifted slightly. She said casually to comfort him, “It’s fine. It’s not that exaggerated.”

Glossary:

¹Dance hall (迪厅 / 舞厅)

A nightlife venue popular in the 1980s–1990s, where people go to dance to loud music, usually pop or disco-style tracks. Unlike modern “clubs,” dance halls in this era are generally simpler and less flashy, often with a big open space, a DJ booth, and basic lighting effects. People go mainly to dance and socialize rather than for VIP culture or drinks-focused nightlife.
